Planer Segmented Infeed Roller Adjustment

Eliminate snipe and ensure uniform feed pressure by adjusting segmented infeed rollers on industrial wood planers. This SOP covers 15–30 inch machines commonly found in cabinet and millwork shops.

Purpose

The segmented infeed roller is responsible for pulling stock into the planer while maintaining constant pressure across the width of the board. Over time, segments wear unevenly or shift, causing snipe (dips at the board ends) and inconsistent feed. This procedure restores uniform roller height, reduces waste, and extends roller life.

Scope

This procedure applies to all segmented infeed roller assemblies on industrial planers (e.g., Powermatic, Grizzly, SCM, Martin, Felder) with independent segment adjustment. It does not cover abrasive planers, moulders, or machines with one‑piece feed rollers. Only qualified maintenance technicians should perform this adjustment.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the planer at the main disconnect before removing any guards or accessing internal assemblies. Verify zero energy state with a voltmeter.
  • PPEWear cut‑resistant gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection. Planer knives may be sharp; avoid contact.
  • HOLDUse a lifting table or mobile work stand if the infeed table is heavy. Do not overreach when loosening bolts.
  • LUBEUse only manufacturer‑recommended lubricants. Flammable solvents must be stored in approved containers away from the machine.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Combination wrench set (metric / SAE as required by your machine)
  • Feeler gauge (0.005–0.030 in, preferably blade‑type)
  • Torque wrench (0–200 in·lb / 0–25 N·m)
  • Silicone spray lubricant (e.g., CRC 808, WD‑40 Specialist)
  • Clean lint‑free rags
  • Lockout/tagout kit (padlock, hasp, danger tag)
  • Machine service manual (for specific torque values and clearances)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout the Planer. Place the main disconnect in the OFF position, attach a padlock and hasp, and apply a danger tag. Verify that the cutterhead and feed rollers are stationary. Remove any residual stored energy (capacitors, springs).
2 Remove Infeed Table Cover and Guards. Using the appropriate wrench, remove the fasteners securing the infeed table top cover. Lift the cover away. Remove any side guards that obstruct access to the segmented roller assembly. Store fasteners in a labelled container.
3 Loosen Segment Mounting Bolts. Identify the mounting bolts for each individual roller segment (typically 4–6 segments per roller). Use a combination wrench to loosen each bolt approximately ¼ turn. Do not remove them—only free the segment for vertical adjustment.
4 Set Roller Height with Feeler Gauge. Insert a feeler gauge of the thickness specified in your machine manual (commonly 0.010 in or 0.015 in) between the bottom of the segment and the table surface. Adjust the segment up or down until a light drag resistance is felt when pulling the gauge. Repeat for all segments. Work in a consistent sequence (e.g., left to right) to avoid confusion.
5 Torque Bolts to Specification. For each segment, tighten the mounting bolts to the torque value indicated in the service manual (typical range: 80–120 in·lb or 9–13.5 N·m). Use a torque wrench and tighten in a cross pattern if multiple bolts per segment. Re‑check the height after torquing; if the segment shifted, loosen and repeat step 4.
6 Lubricate Bearings and Pivot Points. Apply a light coat of silicone spray lubricant to each roller segment bearing and pivot pin. Avoid excessive application; wipe off any runoff with a clean rag. Allow lubricant to penetrate for 60 seconds.
7 Reinstall Covers and Remove LOTO. Replace the infeed table cover and side guards. Tighten fasteners securely. Remove the lockout/tagout devices and restore power. Run a test piece (a straight, dry board at least 36 in long) through the planer. Check for snipe at both ends. If snipe persists, repeat the procedure with a slightly tighter clearance (reduce feeler thickness by 0.002 in).
