This standard operating procedure defines the approved method for adjusting heavy-duty industrial mechanical clutches and lubricating the associated linkage assembly. Proper clutch adjustment ensures full torque transfer, minimizes slippage and heat buildup, and extends friction-disc service life. Systematic linkage lubrication prevents binding, reduces actuation effort, and protects pivot points from corrosion and galling. Adherence to this procedure supports predictive maintenance intervals and reduces the risk of catastrophic clutch failure during production.
This SOP applies to all heavy-duty industrial machinery equipped with mechanically actuated dry or wet clutch assemblies and external linkage systems — including power presses, press brakes, shears, conveyor drives, mill clutches, and large-format industrial gearboxes. It covers friction-disc-type clutches with mechanical linkage actuation (rod, clevis, bell crank, and cross-shaft configurations). This procedure does not apply to hydraulic or pneumatically actuated clutches, electromagnetic clutches, or automotive-style clutch systems installed in mobile equipment.
- Lockout/tagout the prime mover or motor starter in accordance with site energy-control plan. Verify zero energy at the clutch input shaft using a mechanical position indicator or rotation check. Do not rely on electrical disconnection alone — confirm mechanically.
- Wear safety glasses with side shields, heavy-duty work gloves (ANSI cut level A4 or higher), steel-toed boots, and hearing protection if operating near active machinery. Remove all jewellery and secure loose clothing before approaching the clutch assembly.
- Keep all body parts and tools clear of pinch points during linkage adjustment — particularly clevis pins, cross-shaft levers, and spring-loaded pressure plate fingers. Use a holding fixture or blocking device to prevent unintended movement.
- Allow the clutch assembly to cool to ambient temperature (below 40 °C) before handling. Friction surfaces and pressure plates can exceed 90 °C immediately after operation and cause severe burns.
- Combination wrench set (metric & imperial, 8 mm – 24 mm and 5/16 in – 1 in)
- Feeler gauge set (range 0.0015 in – 0.025 in / 0.04 mm – 0.64 mm)
- Grease gun with NLGI #2 EP lithium complex grease (or OEM-specified lubricant)
- Anti-seize compound (copper-based, temperature rating to 980 °C)
- Torque wrench (0–250 ft·lb / 0–340 N·m, calibrated within 12 months)
- Clutch adjustment shim kit (OEM-specified shim thicknesses and ID/OD)
- Shop rags / lint-free wipes (for cleaning and excess grease removal)
- Brake cleaner spray (non-chlorinated, fast-evaporating)
- Dial indicator with magnetic base (0.001 in / 0.025 mm graduation, for runout verification)
