Purpose

All micrometers and calipers used in precision measurement must be zeroed before each use or at the start of the shift. This SOP ensures consistent, traceable zeroing across the shop floor, reducing measurement uncertainty and preventing out-of-tolerance readings that lead to defective parts. A properly zeroed tool is the foundation of reliable dimensional inspection.

Scope

This procedure applies to all outside micrometers (0–25 mm up to 100 mm range), digital calipers (150 mm, 200 mm, 300 mm), and dial calipers used in production, quality control, and maintenance tasks. It covers both initial zeroing and daily verification. Special-purpose micrometers (e.g., depth micrometers, inside micrometers) are zeroed per manufacturer instructions.

Safety Precautions
  • PPEWear safety glasses when cleaning measuring faces with solvents to avoid splash into eyes.
  • CUTAvoid contact with sharp edges on caliper jaws and micrometer anvils—gloves are not recommended for this operation because debris can interfere with measurement.
  • CHEMIsopropyl alcohol is flammable. Use in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Outside micrometer(s) (0–25 mm / 0–1 in, others as needed)
  • Digital or dial caliper (150 mm / 6 in typical)
  • Precision gauge block set (grade 0 or equivalent, traceable to NIST or equivalent)
  • Lint-free cloth (e.g., Kimwipe or optical-grade cloth)
  • Isopropyl alcohol (99% preferred) in a squeeze bottle
  • Small brush (soft, for cleaning threads)
  • Calibration log sheet or digital CMMS (e.g., ServiceGrid)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Clean the measuring faces of the micrometer or caliper using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. For micrometers, also wipe the spindle and anvil. For calipers, clean the jaw faces and the depth rod (if equipped). Allow surfaces to dry completely.
2 Visually inspect the tool for nicks, burrs, scoring, bent spindles, loose jaws, or excessive play. If any damage is found, tag the tool as Out of Calibration and remove from service. Do not attempt to zero a damaged tool.
3 For a micrometer: Rotate the ratchet stop (or friction thimble) to close the spindle gently onto the anvil. The thimble zero line must align exactly with the horizontal reference line on the sleeve. If misaligned, loosen the lock nut/collet, rotate the thimble to align, then retighten. Recheck closure. For digital micrometers, power on, close, and press the ZERO button.
4 For a caliper: Close the jaws fully (or depth rod if applicable). For digital models, press the ZERO (or ABS) button until the display reads 0.000 mm or 0.000 in. Dial calipers: adjust the bezel ring so the dial reads zero when jaws are closed.
5 Verify zero accuracy by measuring a certified gauge block of a known size (e.g., 10 mm for micrometers, 25 mm for calipers). The reading must be within the tool's tolerance: ±0.01 mm for mechanical micrometers, ±1 digit for digital calipers (typically ±0.02 mm for 150 mm calipers). If outside tolerance, repeat steps 1–4. If still failing, tag the tool as out of calibration.
6 Record the zeroing and verification in the calibration log. Include: tool serial number, gauge block used, date, operator name, result (PASS/FAIL), and any corrective action. If using ServiceGrid, log it directly in the PM module.
7 Return the tool to storage or service. If not used immediately, re-zero at the next use to account for thermal changes. Dispose of used cleaning materials properly.
