Purpose

The purpose of the rotary screw air compressor oil and separator change is to replace degraded lubricating oil, worn oil filters, and exhausted separator elements at the manufacturer’s recommended interval (typically every 2000–4000 operating hours or annually, whichever comes first). This preventive maintenance task restores oil cleanliness, maintains proper air/oil separation, and protects downstream components from oil carryover. It also helps maintain compressor efficiency, reduce operating temperatures, and prevent unplanned shutdowns due to fouled valves or ruptured separators.

Scope

This SOP applies to stationary and portable rotary screw air compressors equipped with replaceable oil filters, oil separator elements, and a sealed lubrication system. It covers models from major manufacturers such as Sullair, Ingersoll Rand, Atlas Copco, and Kaeser. This document does not apply to centrifugal, reciprocating, or oil‑free compressors. Operators must consult the specific equipment manual for torque values, oil type, and filter/separator part numbers. This procedure is intended for use by trained maintenance personnel under the supervision of a qualified mechanic.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the compressor at the main electrical disconnect. Verify zero energy state by attempting to restart after lockout. Do not rely on panel switches alone.
  • HOTAllow the compressor to cool for at least 15 minutes after shutdown before opening any caps or plugs. Hot oil and components can cause severe burns.
  • PRESSRelieve all system pressure from the receiver tank, oil separator, and oil circuit before loosening any fitting. Use the manual bleed valve or drain cock.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, chemical‑resistant gloves, and steel‑toed boots. Use oil‑absorbent mats under the work area. Dispose of waste oil and filters per local environmental regulations.
  • SPILLPosition a drain pan (minimum 5‑gallon capacity) beneath the oil drain plug and separator cover. Keep spill cleanup materials (absorbent pads, kitty litter) nearby.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout (LOTO). Shut down the compressor using the normal stop sequence. Isolate the main electrical disconnect and apply a personal lock and tag. Verify zero energy by pressing the start button – the machine must not attempt to start.
2 Relieve system pressure. Open the condensate drain valve on the receiver tank and the manual bleed valve on the oil separator. Wait until no air or oil mist escapes. Confirm pressure gauge reads zero.
3 Drain old oil. Place the drain pan under the oil cooler or sump drain plug. Remove the drain plug (or open the ball valve if equipped) and allow all oil to drain completely. Inspect drained oil for metal particles or discolouration; report anomalies to supervisor.
4 Remove old oil filter. Use an oil filter wrench to unscrew the filter counter‑clockwise. Catch any residual oil. Wipe the mounting surface with a clean rag to remove dirt and old gasket material.
5 Remove separator element. Unbolt the separator cover (note bolt torque for reassembly). Remove the cover, old separator element, gasket, and o‑rings. Clean the mating surfaces with a lint‑free rag.
6 Install new separator element. Place the new element into the housing. Install new gaskets and o‑rings as supplied. Reinstall the cover and torque bolts to the manufacturer’s specification (typically 20–30 ft‑lb).
7 Install new oil filter. Lubricate the gasket of the new filter with a thin layer of fresh compressor oil. Screw it on hand‑tight, then tighten an additional ¾ turn using the filter wrench. Do not overtighten.
8 Refill with new oil. Close the drain plug. Using a funnel, add the recommended oil type and quantity (check sight glass level). Typical fill is to the middle of the sight glass when cold.
9 Check for leaks and test run. Remove LOTO and restore power. Start the compressor and run it for 2–3 minutes to circulate oil. Shut down and inspect the filter, separator cover, and drain plug for leaks. Tighten or reseal as necessary. Recheck oil level and top up if needed.
10 Record maintenance. Log the date, equipment hours, oil type/quantity, filter and separator part numbers, and any observations in the PM system (e.g., ServiceGrid or equipment logbook). Note the next scheduled service interval.
