Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to verify the full stroke actuation, seal integrity, and positional feedback of each vacuum zone valve actuator. Proper function ensures zero pneumatic bypass, consistent vacuum pressure across the table, and minimizes the risk of workpiece shift during high-speed machining operations.

Scope

This procedure applies to all vacuum tables equipped with pneumatic zone valve actuators (e.g., SMC, Festo, Camozzi) controlled by a PLC or manual override panel supporting a maximum of 12 independent zones. It covers initial functional checks, cycle timing, limit switch verification, and leak-down testing.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout (LOTO) the main pneumatic supply (80–100 psi) and electrical disconnect to the vacuum pump and PLC before accessing any valve manifold or actuator linkage. Verify zero pressure using a calibrated gauge.
  • PPEWear safety glasses with side shields, cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A5), and hearing protection (earplugs or muffs, NRR 28 dB) due to potential high-pressure air release and ambient shop noise exceeding 85 dBA.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout & Depressurization: Lockout the main pneumatic supply valve. Actuate each zone valve manually from the PLC HMI or valve manifold override to exhaust residual pressure from all zone lines. Confirm 0 psi on the system gauge.
2 Visual & Mechanical Inspection: Inspect each actuator for physical damage, corrosion, or loose mounting hardware. Verify that the actuator linkage is securely fastened to the valve stem and that the stem is free of debris or binding.
3 Solenoid Coil Resistance Check: Using a digital multimeter set to Ohms (Ω), measure the resistance across the solenoid coil terminals. Compare reading to the manufacturer specification (typically 20–40 Ω). Record variance.
4 Actuator Stroke & Cycle Timing: Restore pneumatic power (after LOTO is fully cleared). Command Zone 1 valve to OPEN and CLOSE from the PLC HMI. Measure the full stroke time (open to close) using a cycle timer. Acceptable time: < 1.5 seconds. Repeat for all zones.
5 Limit Switch & Proximity Sensor Verification: For each actuator, confirm the limit switch or inductive proximity sensor activates precisely at the fully open and fully closed positions using the feeler gauge to measure actuator plunger travel. Adjust sensor brackets as needed.
6 Vacuum Leak-Down Test: Seal the zone with a vacuum cup or plate. Activate the vacuum pump. Command the valve to OPEN. After 5 seconds, isolate the zone (close valve). Measure vacuum decay over 60 seconds. Acceptable decay: < 2 inHg. Snoop-test all fittings and actuator seals.
