Purpose

Eliminate taper and dimensional drift in rip cuts by establishing strict parallelism (+/- 0.002") between the parallel fence face and the saw blade plane. A misaligned fence creates binding conditions that lead to kickback, excessive motor load, and accelerated carbide tip wear. This procedure restores OEM tolerances and supports safe, high-throughput ripping operations.

Scope

Applies to all industrial sliding table saws with a mobile parallel fence assembly (Altendorf, Martin, SCM, Felder, and similar). This procedure is triggered by: (a) routine quarterly PM, (b) any reported tooling crash or fence impact, (c) observed taper > 0.010" over a 500 mm rip cut, or (d) audible blade/fence contact during high-speed cutting. Does not cover cross-cut fence alignment or scorer blade parallel adjust — those require separate SOPs.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout (LOTO) at the main disconnect. Verify zero energy state with a qualified electrician. Do not rely solely on the machine's main switch — isolate upstream power.
  • PPECut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4+) during fence handling and gauge work. Safety glasses with side shields AND full face shield when reaching into the blade chamber. Hearing protection if operating adjacent equipment.
  • BLADEThe main blade and scoring blade have extremely sharp carbide tips. Never rotate the blade with bare hands — use a leather glove or a shop rag. Keep all wrenches clear of the tooth path.
  • PINCHKeep fingers and tools clear of the fence locking linkages. The pneumatic or mechanical clamp can actuate suddenly if air supply is re-engaged during adjustment.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Dial indicator with magnetic base (0.001" / 0.025 mm resolution preferred)
  • Certified 12" machinist's square or combination square (grade B or better)
  • Metric and SAE hex keys (Allen wrenches) — typically 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, and 1/4"
  • Open-end wrenches: 13mm, 17mm, 19mm (or SAE equivalents) for fence lock nuts
  • Soft-faced mallet (nylon or brass) for fine adjustment
  • Feeler gauge set (0.0015" to 0.025")
  • Shop vacuum or compressed air with chip gun
  • Approved solvent (isopropyl alcohol or industrial degreaser) and lint-free wipes
  • Manufacturer's service manual for specific bolt torque values
  • MDF or plywood test panel (~600mm x 300mm) for functional test cut
  • Digital caliper (0.001" resolution) for verifying test cut dimensions

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare & Isolate Machine: Perform Lockout/Tagout on the machine's upstream disconnect. Raise the main blade and scoring unit to full elevation. Remove the throat plate, riving knife, and anti-kickback pawls. Thoroughly clean all sawdust and resin buildup from the sliding table, fixed table, and both fence guide rails using vacuum and approved solvent.
2 Establish Blade Reference Point: Secure the dial indicator magnetic base to the sliding table. Position the indicator plunger against a tooth gullet on the main saw blade at the front-most point (operator side). Slowly rotate the blade by hand (use a gloved hand) to locate the highest point of blade runout, then zero the indicator dial at that point.
3 Measure Front-to-Back Deviation: Without shifting the sliding table or the fence, relocate the magnetic base to a stable point near the rear of the blade. Rotate the blade by hand to bring the exact same reference tooth/gullet to the rear-most position. Read the dial indicator. The allowable deviation is typically ≤ 0.003" (0.076 mm). Record the initial reading.
4 Loosen Fence Locking Mechanism: Identify the bolts securing the parallel fence to its carriage bracket (usually two or four bolts accessible from the rear face of the fence extrusion). Using the correct hex key or wrench, loosen the bolts just enough to allow the fence body to pivot horizontally. Keep the bolts snug enough to prevent the fence from dropping or shifting under its own weight.
5 Adjust Fence Parallelism: Using a soft-faced mallet, gently tap the rear of the fence toward or away from the blade plane. The goal is to bring the rear gap measurement to within 0.0015" of the front measurement. Use a feeler gauge between the fence face and the blade body (not the teeth) for a quick coarse check, but rely on the dial indicator for the final 0.001" resolution.
6 Torque and Re-Verify: Once the indicator shows matched front and rear readings, tighten the fence locking bolts in a star pattern to the manufacturer's specified torque (typically 35–45 Nm). Re-check the front and rear dial indicator readings. Any shift > 0.001" means the adjustment has drifted; loosen and repeat step 5 and 6 until the alignment holds.
7 Functional Test Cut: Reinstall the riving knife and throat plate. Re-energize the machine through proper LOTO removal. Load a piece of MDF or plywood (at least 500mm long). Make a rip cut approximately 100mm wide. Measure the width of the off-cut at the leading and trailing ends with a digital caliper. Deviation must be ≤ 0.010" (0.25 mm). Record all final measurements in the PM logbook.
