Purpose

The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to establish a consistent method for measuring the rubber hardness of edgebander pinch rollers. Rolling hardness outside the specified range can cause uneven pressure, edge banding misalignment, and premature wear. Regular checks reduce downtime and maintain production quality.

Scope

This procedure applies to all edgebander pinch rollers on Model X and Model Y machines at the facility. All maintenance technicians and setup operators are required to perform this check monthly or after every 200 hours of operation, whichever comes first.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the edgebander main power supply before accessing pinch rollers. Verify zero energy state.
  • PPEANSI Z87.1 safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A3) required. Remove loose jewelry and tie back long hair.
  • WORKEnsure area is well-lit and free of debris. Use caution when handling the durometer to avoid dropping it on sensitive components.

  • Digital or analog durometer test block (for calibration check)
  • Clean, lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol (70%)
  • Permanent marker or label for roller identification
  • Go/No-go hardness reference (if specified by manufacturer)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/tagout the edgebander main power supply. Verify zero energy state.
2 Remove any protective covers or guards to expose the pinch roller assembly. Clean the roller surface with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth; allow to dry completely.
3 Calibrate the durometer using the test block per manufacturer instructions. Record calibration reading.
4 Place the durometer perpendicular to the roller surface at the centre of the roller width. Apply firm pressure until the foot is flush with the rubber and the reading stabilises (approximately 2–3 seconds). Record the Shore A value.
5 Repeat the measurement at three evenly spaced positions along the roller length (left, centre, right). Record each reading.
6 Compare the average of the three readings against the manufacturer’s tolerance range (typically 45–65 Shore A for standard pinch rollers). If outside tolerance, mark the roller for replacement.
7 Document results in the PM logbook or digital system (e.g., ServiceGrid). Note roller ID, date, technician, and any corrective action taken.
