Solid Wood Panel Glue Line Color Match
A comprehensive standard operating procedure for verifying seamless optical and structural glue joint integrity on edge-glued solid wood panels prior to sanding and coating. This procedure directly reduces ghost-line defects, finish rejection, and field warranty claims.
The purpose of this SOP is to establish a repeatable, objective standard for evaluating and approving glue lines on solid wood panels prior to surface preparation and finishing. A mismatched or defective glue line creates a visible defect (ghost line), compromises coating adhesion, and results in costly rework or field service calls. This procedure ensures glue joints are optically seamless and structurally sound, directly supporting lifecycle reliability of finished millwork.
This standard applies to all edge-glued solid wood panels, butt joints, and finger joints machined and assembled in the Millwork Department. It covers inspection at the glue-off press, after a minimum 24-hour cure cycle, and immediately prior to sanding. Color matching pertains to species-specific hue, grain continuity, and glue-line opacity for both clear and opaque finish applications.
- Lockout/Tagout – Verify glue press, saws, and sanders are isolated from energy sources before cleaning glue squeeze-out or performing set-up adjustments.
- Wear approved safety glasses at all times. Use cut-resistant gloves when handling cured glue webs or scrap trim. Hearing protection required near glue-off saws operating above 85 dBA.
- Ensure local exhaust ventilation is active when using solvent-based glue cleaners, acetone, or accelerator wipes. Nitrile gloves are mandatory for solvent handling.
- Color match light booth (D65 / 5000K) or handheld color comparator
- White china marker / wax pencil for defect marking
- Hook gauge or .0015″‑.006″ calibrated feeler gauge set
- Approved solvent wipe (e.g., acetone, naphtha) and clean lint-free tac cloth
- Digital caliper or thickness gauge (0.001″ resolution)
- Batch ticket / traveler with press parameters (glue spread, PSI, open time)
- Tablet or workstation logged into ServiceGrid for digital disposition
