Purpose

Provide a repeatable method for preparing tungsten electrodes and replacing collets on TIG welding torches. Proper grinding direction (longitudinal) and collet condition directly affect arc stability, tungsten life, and weld integrity. This SOP reduces downtime caused by arc wander and electrical resistance buildup from contaminated collets.

Scope

Applies to all TIG welding stations using standard collet designs (e.g., WP-9, WP-17, WP-26 series) with tungsten diameters from 1/16 in. to 1/8 in. Covers both new tungsten preparation and in-process re-grinding when the electrode becomes contaminated or rounded. Excludes automated orbital welding systems and non‑standard torch designs.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOPerform lockout/tagout on the welding power source before any torch disassembly. Confirm zero energy with a verified voltmeter.
  • PPEWear impact‑resistant eye protection (ANSI Z87.1) when grinding tungsten. Use welding‑rated gloves during electrode handling to avoid oil transfer. Ensure adequate ventilation or a local exhaust system to control grinding dust (thorium, cerium, lanthanum).
  • FIREKeep grinding area free of combustible materials. Tungsten sparks can ignite nearby solvents or rags. Have a Class D fire extinguisher accessible.

  • Tungsten grinder or bench grinder with a dedicated diamond or silicon carbide wheel (100–150 grit)
  • Collet set (sizes: 1/16 in., 3/32 in., 1/8 in.)
  • Torch‑specific wrenches (back cap and collet body)
  • Tungsten electrodes (2% thoriated, lanthanated, or ceriated) — verify diameter
  • Lint‑free cloth (isopropyl alcohol optional for final wipe)
  • Collet body (check for thread damage or wear)
  • Magnifying glass or borescope for collet inspection

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout. Disconnect primary power to the welding machine. Attach a personal lock and tag. Verify zero voltage with a calibrated voltmeter between electrode holder and workpiece.
2 Disassemble torch. Unscrew the back cap (gas lens or standard). Remove the collet body, collet, and used tungsten electrode. Place parts in a clean tray.
3 Inspect components. Examine the collet for cracks, oval deformation, or signs of electrical arc‑tracking. Check the collet body threads and internal taper for burrs. Replace any damaged parts.
4 Select tungsten. Choose the correct diameter for the amperage range: 1/16 in. (up to 150 A), 3/32 in. (150–250 A), 1/8 in. (250–400 A). Use a clean, straight rod without surface pits.
5 Grind the tungsten. Hold the rod perpendicular to the grinding wheel. Grind longitudinally (parallel to the axis) to produce a flat tip or a taper of 2–3 times the diameter. Never grind transversely — that creates circumferential grooves that destabilise the arc. Avoid overheating; dip in water if the tip turns blue.
6 Clean the electrode. Wipe the ground tungsten with a lint‑free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Remove all grinding dust and oils from handling.
7 Install new collet. Slide the new collet into the collet body. Insert the prepared tungsten electrode so that 3–5 mm protrudes beyond the collet face (adjust for gas lens depth).
8 Reassemble torch. Thread the collet body into the torch head. Tighten the back cap finger‑tight, then snug with the appropriate wrench — do not overtighten (max 2.8 N·m / 25 in‑lb for most WP‑series).
9 Restore power and test. Remove lockout/tagout. Connect torch, set a low amperage (40–60 A), and strike an arc on scrap. Inspect for stable arc shape and absence of wandering. Adjust stickout if needed.
