Tool Holder Balancing & Runout Check HSK 63F / ISO 30

Purpose

To establish a repeatable, precision-controlled process for dynamically balancing HSK 63F and ISO 30 tool holders and verifying radial runout. The goal is to minimize spindle vibration at high RPM, extend bearing and tool life, and achieve surface finish specifications (Ra ≤ 0.8 µm). This SOP directly reduces chatter-related scrap and unplanned spindle downtime.

Scope

This procedure covers all HSK 63F and ISO 30 tool holders used in CNC milling and turning centres operating above 8,000 RPM within the manufacturing facility. It applies to holders after initial assembly, after any component replacement (collet, nut, pull-stud), and on a scheduled PM interval of every 200 operating hours or immediately when surface finish anomalies or vibration spikes are detected.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the balancing machine before cleaning or changing tool holders. Verify zero energy state by pressing the spindle stop button and confirming the spindle is stationary.
  • PPEWear safety glasses with side shields, cut‑resistant gloves when handling sharp tool edges, and hearing protection when the balancing machine is running above ambient noise.
  • CHEMUse isopropyl alcohol in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. Dispose of used wipers in a fire-safe container. Do not spray solvent directly onto rotating assemblies.
  • PINCHKeep hands clear of the clamping mechanism during spindle lock engagement. Use the provided foot pedal or hand lever — never bridge the gap with fingers.

  • Isopropyl alcohol ≥99% and lint-free wipers (Kimtech or equivalent class 10)
  • Correction weight set (gram increments) compatible with holder balance rings / radial drillings
  • HSK 63F / ISO 30 master reference holder for machine calibration check
  • Permanent marker and holder identification sticker for documenting residual values

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Clean and inspect tool holder. Wipe the HSK 63F taper face and gauge line or the ISO 30 taper and drive slots with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipers. Verify no nicks, burrs, or coolant deposits exist on any locating surface. If damage is found, remove the holder from service.
2 Mount holder on balancing machine. Select the correct spindle adapter (HSK 63F or ISO 30). Insert the holder and actuate the clamping mechanism. Verify full seating: for HSK, confirm face contact; for ISO 30, confirm pull‑stud engagement. Tighten to manufacturer torque specification.
3 Perform initial balance measurement. Set the balancing machine to the exact holder geometry (select HSK 63F or ISO 30 profile). Target balance quality grade G 6.3 per ISO 1940-1. Run a spin cycle at the programmed RPM. Record both residual unbalance magnitude (g·mm) and angular position (degrees).
4 Apply correction weights. Using the calculated angle, add or remove weights at the designated balance planes. For HSK 63F, use threaded balance ring screws; for ISO 30, insert weights into radial flange holes. Re‑spin after each adjustment. Repeat until residual unbalance is ≤ 1.0 g·mm or per machine specification.
5 Measure radial runout. Transfer the balanced holder to a clean granite surface or V‑block fixture. Mount the dial indicator so the tip contacts the taper gauge diameter (for ISO 30) or the flange OD (for HSK 63F). Rotate the holder by hand 360° and read Total Indicated Runout (TIR). Maximum allowed: 0.005 mm.
6 Final verification and documentation. If TIR exceeds 0.005 mm, loosen collet nut by 10 %, rotate the tool 90°, retorque, and re‑measure. Once passing, write the final balance value and runout on an identification sticker and affix it to the holder. Log the results in the CMMS database under the holder serial number.
