Purpose

To standardize the destructive evaluation of adhesive bond line strength through the Block Shear test method, providing quantitative shear strength data (MPa) and qualitative failure mode analysis. This procedure ensures that the bonding process consistently produces joints capable of meeting structural design loads.

Scope

This SOP applies to all wood-to-wood and composite-to-composite structural glue joints tested per ASTM D905 or CSA O112.9 standards. It encompasses specimen preparation verification, environmental conditioning, UTM setup, test execution, data collection, and fixture maintenance. This protocol is critical for quality assurance and process control in bonding operations.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOIsolate and lock out the UTM hydraulic/pneumatic supply before adjusting grips or shear fixtures. Verify zero energy state.
  • PPEClass 2 impact-rated safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4), and steel-toed boots are mandatory in the test cell during operation.
  • SHEARShear blade and anvil create a severe pinch point. Never place fingers between the shear tool and specimen while the actuator is powered.
  • CAUGHTEnsure long hair, loose clothing, and jewelry are secured before operating the UTM. Secure specimen fragments during ejection.

  • Universal Testing Machine (UTM), 5 kN minimum capacity, with a valid calibration certificate (ISO 7500-1 Class 1).
  • Self-aligning Block Shear Fixture (ASTM D905 standard geometry).
  • Digital Calipers, 150 mm, 0.01 mm resolution.
  • Environmental Conditioning Chamber (23°C ± 2°C, 50% ± 5% RH).
  • Ultrasonic Cleaner or compressed air for fixture cleaning.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Conditioning: Place the block shear specimens flat in the conditioning chamber for 48 hours at 23°C ± 2°C and 50% ± 5% RH prior to testing. Verify conditions with a calibrated data logger.
2 Dimensional Inspection: Measure width and length of the shear plane at the glue line to the nearest 0.01 mm using digital calipers. Calculate and record the shear area (Length x Width) in mm².
3 Fixture Alignment: Install the block shear fixture in the UTM compression platens. Apply a small preload (10 N) to seat the self-leveling platen. Verify concentric alignment with the load cell axis using a machinist's square. Zero the crosshead position.
4 Specimen Mounting: Insert the specimen symmetrically into the fixture. Ensure the glue line is exactly aligned with the shear plane of the tooling and the loading block rests flat against the specimen edge.
5 Load Application: Actuate the UTM at a constant crosshead speed of 1.27 mm/min (0.05 in/min). Program the test to stop after a 50% drop from the maximum recorded load to ensure full fracture propagation.
6 Data Acquisition: Record the maximum load (kN) at failure. The UTM software will automatically calculate the shear stress (MPa) = Max Load / Shear Area. Verify the calculation manually for the first test of each batch.
7 Fracture Analysis: Visually inspect the fractured surfaces. Estimate the percentage of wood/laminate failure (W/F) versus adhesive failure (A/F). Classify the failure mode as Cohesive, Adhesive, or Substrate (stock pullout).
8 Reporting & Reset: Export the test results (Load vs. Extension curve). Log the peak load, shear stress, and failure mode into ServiceGrid. Clean the fixture thoroughly with an ultrasonic cleaner or compressed air and inspect for damage before the next test.
