Color Coded Cleaning Tool Brush Broom Segregation Sop
Standard operating procedure for implementing a color-coded cleaning tool system using brushes and brooms to prevent cross-contamination between zones and uphold 5S visual management standards.
To establish a standardized system for segregating cleaning brushes and brooms by color code, eliminating the risk of cross-contamination between production areas, food contact surfaces, restrooms, and chemical spill zones. This SOP supports visual factory principles, reduces sanitation errors, and improves overall 5S compliance.
This SOP applies to all production, packaging, maintenance, and janitorial areas within the facility where manual cleaning tools (brushes, brooms, dustpans, squeegees) are used. It covers the assignment of color codes, labeling of tools, storage rack setup, personnel training, and ongoing inspection. Excluded are powered cleaning equipment and disposable wipes.
- Lockout / Tagout any equipment or machinery before performing cleaning that involves moving parts. Ensure zero energy state before entering with brooms or brushes.
- Wear cut-resistant gloves and safety glasses when handling broken broom handles or sharp debris. Use chemical-resistant gloves when cleaning with solvents.
- Use ergonomic sweeping techniques: keep back straight, push broom with legs, avoid over-reaching. Report any tool damage that could cause strain.
- Color-coded brush/broom sets (red, blue, green, yellow, white) with matching dustpans
- Permanent color labels or heat shrink tubing ( 20 mm diameter, assorted colors)
- Wall-mounted storage racks or shadow boards with color-coded backdrops
- Color identification chart (laminated A4 poster)
- 5S inspection checklist
- Label maker or paint pen for additional marking
