This procedure defines a repeatable method for verifying the closing force and timing of hydraulic or pneumatic door dampers. Proper function ensures door closure complies with building codes, reduces risk of pinch injuries, and extends damper service life.

Purpose

The purpose of this test is to verify that the door damper applies a consistent closing force and speed within the manufacturer’s specified tolerance. A functional damper prevents doors from slamming (noise hazard) or failing to close fully (security & energy loss). Regular function testing also identifies internal seal wear or hydraulic leaks before they cause a full failure.

Scope

This SOP applies to all hydraulic and pneumatic door dampers installed on pedestrian doors, fire doors, and light industrial access doors within the facility. It covers function testing of dampers rated for closing force between 20 N and 200 N and closing times between 2 and 30 seconds (per 90° of swing). Excludes heavy-duty industrial blast doors and sliding door mechanisms.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLock out the door’s power source (pneumatic/hydraulic) before disconnecting any lines. Use a verified LOTO tag and padlock per CSA Z460.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves when handling damper components or adjusting fasteners under tension.
  • PINCHKeep hands and fingers clear of the door’s hinge side during cycling. Use the provided force gauge attachment point – never hold the door edge bare-handed.
  • LIFTDoors exceeding 45 kg require two-person handling or mechanical lift assist. Follow manual lifting guidelines (NIOSH equation).

  • Digital force gauge (0–200 N, ±1%), with door-edge attachment hook
  • Stopwatch or smartphone timer (accuracy ±0.1 s)
  • Torque wrench (range matched to damper adjustment screw specs)
  • Hex key set (metric & imperial) / screwdriver set (Philips & slotted)
  • Lint-free cloth & degreaser (isopropyl alcohol 70%)
  • Manufacturer datasheet for specific damper model
  • Pen and test log sheet or digital tablet

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lock Out & Isolate. Disconnect the pneumatic/hydraulic supply line to the damper. Install a lockout/tagout device per CSA Z460. Verify zero pressure by bleeding the downstream line briefly into a rag.
2 Visual Inspection & Clean. Examine the damper body, seals, and mounting brackets for cracks, leaks, or corrosion. Wipe all mating surfaces with lint-free cloth and degreaser.
3 Verify Model & Specs. Record the damper model number and cross-reference with the manufacturer datasheet. Note the nominal closing force (N) and closing time (s) for a 90° arc.
4 Reconnect Power & Purge. Reopen supply valve. Cycle the door manually 3 full times (open–close) to evacuate trapped air. Listen for hissing or grinding – if abnormal, proceed to step 8.
5 Force Measurement. Attach the force gauge hook to the door edge at the manufacturer‑specified test point. Pull the door at a steady, slow rate (approx. 0.5 m/s) and record force readings at 45°, 60°, and 90° from the fully closed position.
6 Time Measurement. Fully open the door (90°). Release and start the stopwatch. Record the time from release until the door reaches 0° (fully closed). Repeat 3 times and use the average.
7 Adjust (If Needed). If force or time deviates by more than ±15% from spec, locate the damper’s flow control valves (typically two hex screws). Adjust the close‑speed valve first (CW slows, CCW speeds up). Re‑measure force and time after each ¼‑turn adjustment. Do not exceed 5 total turns.
8 Final Acceptance Test. Criteria: door closes smoothly with no bounce; latching speed < 0.5 m/s (visual edge speed); closing time within ±10% of nominal; no abnormal noise. Pass/Fail recorded in the test log. If failed, tag the damper for replacement and notify maintenance.
