Finished Panel Odour Test

Purpose

The finished panel odour test is conducted to objectively assess the residual chemical odour emitted by coated wood composite panels after the curing cycle. Excessive VOC off-gassing indicates incomplete polymerisation, incorrect catalyst ratio, or insufficient ventilation during cure. By systematically detecting and scoring odour intensity, the shop can isolate rework batches before they reach the customer, prevent returns or complaints, and maintain compliance with indoor air quality standards such as CAN/CGSB-146.2 and LEED v4 low-emitting material requirements.

This procedure also supports continuous improvement. Trended odour scores over time identify shifts in coating performance, enabling process corrections before the defect becomes chronic. The data feeds directly into the daily lean production board under the quality metric category.

Scope

This SOP applies to all coated interior wood composite panels produced in the finishing department — including particleboard, MDF, plywood, and hardboard substrates finished with UV-cured acrylic, conversion varnish, catalyzed lacquer, or waterborne topcoats. The test is performed on every production batch at the end of the cure cycle, before the panels move to packaging or final assembly.

Excluded from this procedure: unfinished raw panels, panels that have not completed the specified minimum cure time (per coating manufacturer technical data sheet), and panels intended for exterior use where different off-gassing standards apply. For exterior panels, refer to SOP-EXT-006 (Exterior Panel Weathering & Off-Gas Evaluation).

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the conditioning chamber ventilation fan before opening the access door if the chamber contains panels that are still hot (surface temp > 38 °C). Verify zero energy state on the fan disconnect switch. Only trained and authorised employees may perform LOTO; refer to SOP-LOTO-001.
  • PPEWear powder-free nitrile gloves at all times when handling coated panels. Avoid skin contact with uncured or partially cured coating residues. Safety glasses with side shields are required when cutting or scoring panels for re-test samples.
  • VOCPerform the blind odour evaluation in a well-ventilated area with a minimum of six air changes per hour. If the evaluator detects a score of 4 or higher during testing, step away immediately and allow the jar to vent in a fume hood for 30 minutes before re-sealing. Do not concentrate sniff repeatedly — limit to three short inhalations per sample, separated by at least 10 seconds of fresh air.
  • FIRESolvent-based coating fumes are flammable. No open flames, hot work, or spark-producing equipment is permitted within 3 m of the conditioning area or sample storage zone. Confirm the area has a functioning Class B fire extinguisher installed within travel distance.

  • Panel tracking log — pre-printed batch record with blind-code label fields
  • Data collection form — paper or digital tablet with scoring matrix
  • Blind test barrier — privacy screen or opaque curtain to conceal sample identity
  • Handheld VOC meter (optional) — for cross-reference measurement on borderline samples
  • Colour-coded disposition tags — green (PASS), yellow (REWORK), red (QUARANTINE)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Sample Selection and Identification — Select three (3) representative finished panels from the production batch. Choose panels from different positions in the stack (top, middle, bottom) to capture variability. Label each sample with a unique blind code (e.g., A1, B2, C3) using the panel tracking log. Record the batch number, coating lot number, and total cure time (hours:minutes) on the data collection form. Do not write the batch number directly on the jar label — only the blind code.
2 Sample Conditioning — Place the labelled samples in the conditioning chamber set to 21 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 10 % relative humidity. Arrange panels individually, not stacked, with a minimum 25 mm air gap between each. Start the digital timer upon placement. Condition for 15 minutes minimum. If the panel surface temperature exceeds 35 °C (measured with an infrared thermometer), extend conditioning by an additional 10 minutes before proceeding.
3 Seal and Headspace Build-Up — Don clean nitrile gloves. Transfer each conditioned panel sample into its own clean, dry 1 L glass jar. Work quickly — minimise the time the sample is exposed to ambient air. Seal each jar immediately with the lid and tighten to finger-tight. Label each jar with the corresponding blind code using a permanent marker. Allow the headspace to equilibrate for exactly 10 minutes ± 30 seconds. Record the seal time (HH:MM) on the data form.
4 Blind Odour Evaluation — Move the sealed jars behind the privacy screen. The evaluator must be blinded — they must not see the panel tracking log, the batch labels, or any markings other than the blind code. Open each jar approximately 2 cm (do not fully remove the lid). Waft the headspace toward your nose using one hand — do not sniff directly into the jar opening. Take one short inhalation, note the intensity, then step back and breathe fresh air for at least 10 seconds before the next sniff. Assign a score using the 0–5 odour scale: 0 = no perceptible odour; 1 = barely detectable; 2 = slight but acceptable; 3 = moderate, noticeable defect; 4 = strong, objectionable; 5 = overpowering, unacceptable. Repeat for each jar. Record all three scores on the data form.
5 Pass/Fail Determination — If any of the three samples receives a score of 3 or higher, the entire batch is flagged as FAIL. Re-test is not permitted on the same batch — proceed directly to disposition. If all three samples score 2 or lower, the batch PASSES. The evaluator writes the final decision (PASS / FAIL), their initials, and the completion timestamp on the data collection form. Retain the sealed reference jars (unopened) for 72 hours in the designated retention area in case of customer escalation.
6 Documentation and Disposition — Complete the panel tracking log with the final disposition: PASS = release to inventory or shipping department; attach a green disposition tag to the batch pallet. REWORK = return the entire batch to the coating station for an additional 24-hour ventilation hold or re-coating; attach a yellow tag; update the rework log. QUARANTINE = hold the batch for further VOC analysis via gas chromatography if odour score ≥ 4; attach a red tag; notify the quality manager within 1 hour. Scan or file the completed data form in the batch record folder (physical or cloud-based). Update the daily lean quality board with the pass rate.
