Finished Panel Odour Test
This SOP defines the standardised sensory evaluation method for detecting volatile organic compound (VOC) off-gassing in coated wood composite panels. Consistent odour testing ensures products meet customer quality expectations and regulatory VOC emission thresholds before shipment.
The finished panel odour test is conducted to objectively assess the residual chemical odour emitted by coated wood composite panels after the curing cycle. Excessive VOC off-gassing indicates incomplete polymerisation, incorrect catalyst ratio, or insufficient ventilation during cure. By systematically detecting and scoring odour intensity, the shop can isolate rework batches before they reach the customer, prevent returns or complaints, and maintain compliance with indoor air quality standards such as CAN/CGSB-146.2 and LEED v4 low-emitting material requirements.
This procedure also supports continuous improvement. Trended odour scores over time identify shifts in coating performance, enabling process corrections before the defect becomes chronic. The data feeds directly into the daily lean production board under the quality metric category.
This SOP applies to all coated interior wood composite panels produced in the finishing department — including particleboard, MDF, plywood, and hardboard substrates finished with UV-cured acrylic, conversion varnish, catalyzed lacquer, or waterborne topcoats. The test is performed on every production batch at the end of the cure cycle, before the panels move to packaging or final assembly.
Excluded from this procedure: unfinished raw panels, panels that have not completed the specified minimum cure time (per coating manufacturer technical data sheet), and panels intended for exterior use where different off-gassing standards apply. For exterior panels, refer to SOP-EXT-006 (Exterior Panel Weathering & Off-Gas Evaluation).
- Lockout/tagout the conditioning chamber ventilation fan before opening the access door if the chamber contains panels that are still hot (surface temp > 38 °C). Verify zero energy state on the fan disconnect switch. Only trained and authorised employees may perform LOTO; refer to SOP-LOTO-001.
- Wear powder-free nitrile gloves at all times when handling coated panels. Avoid skin contact with uncured or partially cured coating residues. Safety glasses with side shields are required when cutting or scoring panels for re-test samples.
- Perform the blind odour evaluation in a well-ventilated area with a minimum of six air changes per hour. If the evaluator detects a score of 4 or higher during testing, step away immediately and allow the jar to vent in a fume hood for 30 minutes before re-sealing. Do not concentrate sniff repeatedly — limit to three short inhalations per sample, separated by at least 10 seconds of fresh air.
- Solvent-based coating fumes are flammable. No open flames, hot work, or spark-producing equipment is permitted within 3 m of the conditioning area or sample storage zone. Confirm the area has a functioning Class B fire extinguisher installed within travel distance.
- Finished panel samples — minimum 3 representative panels per batch
- Clear glass jars (1 L capacity) with tight-sealing lids — 3 per test batch
- Odour scale reference sheet — printed 0–5 intensity scale with descriptor anchors
- Panel conditioning chamber — temperature-controlled staging area (21 ± 2 °C, 50 ± 10 % RH)
- Digital timer — resolution of 1 second or better
- Nitrile gloves — powder-free, unscented
- Panel tracking log — pre-printed batch record with blind-code label fields
- Data collection form — paper or digital tablet with scoring matrix
- Blind test barrier — privacy screen or opaque curtain to conceal sample identity
- Handheld VOC meter (optional) — for cross-reference measurement on borderline samples
- Colour-coded disposition tags — green (PASS), yellow (REWORK), red (QUARANTINE)
