This procedure defines the correct method for inspecting, operating, and maintaining a slide-out waste container mechanism commonly found in lean manufacturing cells, assembly stations, and 5S shadow boards. Proper function reduces downtime and prevents ergonomic strain.

Purpose

To ensure that the waste container slide-out mechanism is operated safely, inspected for wear, and maintained in a condition that allows smooth, one-handed extension and retraction without binding or tilting. A well-maintained slide-out prevents trash accumulation at the workstation, supports 5S visual order, and reduces the risk of pinch-point injuries.

Scope

This SOP applies to all shop-floor waste container slide-out mechanisms—both ball-bearing and roller-type slides—installed at individual workstations, assembly benches, or in mobile lean carts. It covers daily visual checks, lubrication intervals, and corrective action for common failures. Does not apply to industrial dumpsters or powered compactor systems.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout any adjacent powered machinery that shares the same workbench or structure before inspecting or cleaning the slide mechanism. Verify zero-energy state with a calibrated tester.
  • PINCHKeep fingers and loose clothing clear of the slide rail pinch points during extension and retraction. Use the designated container handles only—never reach under the bin.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A5 minimum) and safety glasses when handling metal slide rails or applying lubricant. Lint-free cloths reduce the risk of foreign object debris (FOD).
  • LOADDo not exceed the slide’s rated dynamic load (printed on the side rail). Overloading can cause sudden fracture and fall of the container. If no rating is visible, assume 15 kg maximum.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Approved degreaser (e.g., Simple Green D, or equivalent that is safe on polymers)
  • Lint-free cloth or disposable wiper
  • Dry lubricant (PTFE spray, MoS₂ powder, or manufacturer-recommended grease)
  • General-purpose hand tools (Allen keys, #2 Phillips screwdriver)
  • Waste container (pre-charged with liner) — must match the slide’s quick-release bracket
  • Safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout / Tagout (if required) — Isolate and lockout any powered equipment within 1 m of the slide path. Apply personal padlock and tag. Use a live-dead-live meter on any exposed electrical enclosures. Confirm zero energy state.
2 Visual inspection of slides — Fully extend the container. Inspect both slide rails for debris, metal shavings, burrs, weld spatter, or corrosion. Pay attention to the bearing blocks, end stops, and mounting screws. Document any damage on the 5S check sheet.
3 Check smoothness and alignment — Grip the container by the designated handles and cycle it through full extension and retraction three times. Feel for binding, catches, or tilt. Measure side-to-side play with a feeler gauge at the midpoint; acceptable play is ≤2 mm. If binding is present, proceed to step 4; otherwise skip to step 6.
4 Remove container and clean rails — If the slide has a quick-release mechanism, press the release tabs and lift the container off. Otherwise, remove any retaining hardware. Wipe the rails with degreaser and a lint-free cloth. Remove all accumulated dirt, grease, and metal fines.
5 Lubricate slide mechanism — Apply a thin, even coat of dry lubricant to the top and side surfaces of both rails. Avoid over-spray. Let the lubricant flash off for 60 seconds. Reinstall the container (or re-engage quick-release) and cycle the slide three more times to distribute lubricant.
6 Final verification and sign-off — With the container fully retracted, confirm it sits flush against the frame and the latch or detent engages positively. Verify that the liner is not caught on the front edge. Initial and date the 5S tag affixed to the slide bracket. If any defect was found that could not be corrected (e.g., bent rail, failed bearing), tag the mechanism “OUT OF SERVICE” and notify the cell lead.
