Purpose

To define the standardized method for applying a silicone bead to glass inserts that achieves consistent seal dimensions, prevents air leaks, and maintains structural integrity of the assembly. Uniform bead profile directly reduces rework and scrap in the glazing line.

Scope

This procedure applies to all operators on the glass insert assembly line, covering manual bead application using standard caulking guns and pneumatic applicators. It governs both initial assembly and rework stations. Does not apply to automated robotic dispensing cells (see SOP GL-104 for robotic parameters).

Safety Precautions
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves to protect against glass edges. Use safety glasses at all times during bead application and profiling to prevent silicone splash.
  • FUMEEnsure adequate ventilation when using solvent-based cleaners. Keep isopropyl alcohol containers sealed and away from ignition sources.
  • ERGUse an adjustable-height work surface to avoid repetitive strain from sustained trigger pressure on caulking gun. Take micro-breaks every 30 minutes.
  • LOTOFor pneumatic caulking guns: lock out and tag out air supply lines before cleaning or replacing cartridges.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Silicone cartridge (approved compound per BOM – e.g., Dow Corning 795 or equivalent)
  • Manual or pneumatic caulking gun (smooth-rod, no-drip preferred)
  • Bead profile tool (triangular or rounded profile per engineering spec – size 6–8 mm)
  • Glass cleaner (ammonia-free) and lint-free microfiber cloth
  • Isopropyl alcohol (70% min) in spray bottle
  • Measuring tape or feeler gauge (to verify bead height)
  • Disposable scrap cloth for excess silicone

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Clean the glass insert perimeter – Spray isopropyl alcohol onto a lint-free cloth and wipe the entire bonding surface. Wait 30 seconds for complete evaporation. Verify no visible oil, dust, or residue remains.
2 Prepare the cartridge – Cut the nozzle tip at a 45° angle to achieve a 6 mm opening. Load into caulking gun. Depress the trigger slowly until compound reaches the tip, then purge a 1 cm bead onto a scrap cloth to remove air pockets.
3 Position and angle – Hold the nozzle 2–3 mm from the glass edge at a consistent 45° angle. Begin at a corner of the glass insert. Maintain a steady trigger pull without stopping or reversing.
4 Apply the bead continuously – Move the gun along the perimeter in one smooth, unbroken motion. Keep speed uniform to produce a 6–8 mm diameter bead. Avoid overlapping at start/finish point; feather the end with a quick lift.
5 Profile the bead – Within 30 seconds of application, run the profile tool firmly along the bead to shape it to the specified cross-section (triangular or rounded). Wipe excess silicone from the tool onto a scrap cloth after each pass.
6 Inspect and verify – Visually examine the entire bead under good lighting. Check for gaps, bubbles, thin spots (<4 mm width), or breaks in continuity. Use a feeler gauge to confirm height meets spec. Reject and rework any unit that fails inspection.
