Purpose

To establish a repeatable process for measuring the base height of hinge plates using a height gauge and granite surface plate. Accurate base height is critical for hinge alignment, fastener fit, and overall assembly quality. This SOP supports lean manufacturing goals by reducing variation and enabling first-pass yield improvement.

Scope

This SOP applies to all hinge plates received from external suppliers or produced in‑house that require base height verification per engineering drawing (reference: HPL-001 Rev C). It covers the inspection station in the quality room and is performed by certified quality technicians or trained production operators designated by the quality manager.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout is not required for this manual measurement task. However, ensure the inspection area is clear of moving machinery hazards.
  • PPEWear safety glasses to protect against potential debris. Use cut‑resistant gloves if handling sharp‑edged hinge plates.
  • ERGUse proper lifting technique when moving heavy or bulky hinge plates ( > 10 kg). Use a hoist or cart if available.
  • CHEMIf using solvent for cleaning, follow SDS guidelines and ensure adequate ventilation.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Digital vernier caliper (0.01 mm resolution) – for auxiliary checks
  • Granite surface plate (Grade AA or better)
  • Height gauge with dial indicator (0.001 in / 0.02 mm graduation)
  • Lint‑free cleaning cloth
  • Isopropyl alcohol or mild solvent
  • Approved inspection marker (e.g., Sharpie or Dykem)
  • Inspection log sheet or digital data collection system
  • Engineering drawing HPL-001 Rev C (or current revision)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Clean the surface plate and the base of the hinge plate with a lint‑free cloth and isopropyl alcohol. Allow to dry completely.
2 Place the hinge plate base‑down on the surface plate. Gently rock the plate to ensure full contact and no burrs or debris are present. If rocking occurs, inspect for burrs and remove them with a fine file or stone.
3 Mount the dial indicator on the height gauge. Zero the indicator against the surface plate by bringing the tip into contact and adjusting the bezel to read zero.
4 Slowly lower the indicator tip onto the top face of the hinge plate. Move the gauge across the surface to locate the highest point. Record the reading at that point. If the part is too large, take readings at three locations: front edge, center, and back edge.
5 Calculate the average of three readings (if multiple) and compare to the drawing tolerance (±0.05 mm). The base height should be within the range specified on the drawing (e.g., 12.70 ± 0.05 mm).
6 If within tolerance, mark the part with a green "OK" stamp or approved inspection marker. If out of tolerance, mark with a red "REJECT" tag and segregate for rework or scrap disposition per QP-007.
7 Record the measured values, date, inspector ID, and part serial number in the inspection log (physical or digital). Report any recurring out‑of‑tolerance trends to the quality supervisor.
