Purpose

To ensure that grommet holes are sized correctly to prevent cable damage, maintain ingress protection (IP) ratings, and allow for safe, reliable cable entry. Incorrect hole sizes can lead to grommet failure, moisture ingress, or cable chafing.

Scope

This SOP applies to all cable entry points on electrical enclosures, junction boxes, and control panels where grommets are used. It covers measurement, verification, and documentation of hole diameters in compliance with manufacturer specifications and industry standards (e.g., NEMA, CSA).

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout: Ensure all circuits are de-energized before drilling or measuring near live equipment. Use lockout/tagout procedures per company policy.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves when handling metal shavings or using deburring tools. Hearing protection if using power tools.
  • EDGEDeburring: Sharp edges after drilling must be deburred to prevent grommet damage and cut hazards.

  • Digital caliper (resolution 0.01 mm)
  • Go/No-Go gauge set (or dial bore gauge) for hole diameter
  • Deburring tool (or countersink)
  • Marker or scribe for identification
  • Manufacturer-approved grommet samples
  • Inspection log sheet and pen

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Identify the required grommet size per engineering drawing or cable specification. Note the nominal hole diameter and tolerance (e.g., 20.0 mm ±0.2 mm).
2 Power down the enclosure and verify lockout/tagout. Remove any existing grommet or debris from the hole.
3 Visually inspect the hole for burrs, rough edges, or deformation. Use a deburring tool to smooth all edges.
4 Using a digital caliper, measure the hole diameter at two perpendicular axes (X and Y). Record the maximum and minimum readings. Ensure both fall within tolerance.
5 If using a Go/No-Go gauge: insert the Go gauge; it should pass through easily. The No-Go gauge should not pass. Repeat for all holes.
6 If the hole is out of tolerance, document the deviation and escalate to engineering for rework or new panel fabrication. Do not install grommet.
7 Once verified, clean the hole with a lint-free cloth, apply any required sealant, and install the correct grommet per manufacturer torque specifications.
