Purpose

This procedure establishes a standardized method for fitting and aligning metal drawer systems in commercial‑grade filing cabinets and casework. Proper fit eliminates binding, racking, and premature wear of slides, ensuring smooth operation under repeated loading cycles. Consistent alignment also prevents damage to drawer facades and adjacent cabinet components during assembly and field installation.

Scope

Applies to all single‑ and double‑wall metal drawer assemblies using full‑extension ball‑bearing slides with 45‑mm side clearance. Covers initial slide installation, shimming for lateral centring, fore‑ and‑aft adjustment via slide slot slots, vertical levelling, and final torque verification. Excludes soft‑close dampers, undermount slides, and wood or composite drawer boxes.

Safety Precautions
  • PPEWear safety glasses and cut‑resistant gloves when handling sheet metal edges and fasteners; burrs and sharp flanges can cause lacerations.
  • PINCHKeep hands clear of slide channels during drawer insertion; slides can close suddenly and pinch fingers. Use a push stick if the drawer is heavy.
  • LOTODe‑energize and lockout any powered equipment (band saws, deburring stations) before performing manual fit‑up operations on adjacent work surfaces.

  • Torx T25 driver (electric or manual)
  • 1/4″ hex wrench (L‑key or bit)
  • Rubber mallet (0.5‑kg head)
  • Digital caliper (0.01‑mm resolution)
  • Machinist’s level (300‑mm length)
  • Torque wrench (Nm‑scale, 1–10 N·m range)
  • Shim set (0.5‑mm and 1.0‑mm stainless steel)
  • Fine file or deburring tool

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Inspected and deburr drawer and cabinet — Examine the drawer side panels and cabinet bracket flanges for burrs, dents, or weld spatter. Remove any imperfections with a fine file or deburring tool. Wipe clean with a lint‑free rag.
2 Install slide channels — Fasten the slide channel to the drawer side panel using supplied Torx screws (do not tighten fully). Attach the mating channel to the cabinet bracket. Ensure both channels are parallel within 0.5 mm over their entire length; use a digital caliper to check.
3 Insert drawer and cycle test — Fully insert the drawer into the cabinet opening. Extend and retract the drawer 5–10 full cycles. Listen for binding, scraping, or irregular resistance. If smooth, proceed to final torque. If binding is detected, proceed to step 4.
4 Correct lateral misalignment — Loosen the slide‐to‑bracket screws on the binding side. Insert shims (0.5 mm or 1.0 mm) between the cabinet bracket and the slide channel to push the drawer toward centre. Re‑tighten screws and re‑test. Repeat until left‑right gap is equal (±0.5 mm measured with caliper).
5 Adjust front‑to‑back position — If the drawer sits proud or recessed, loosen the slide retention screws and slide the channel forward or backward within its adjustment slot. Re‑tighten to 2.5 N·m. Check that the drawer front is flush with adjacent cabinets (±1.0 mm).
6 Verify vertical level — Place a 300‑mm machinist’s level across the top edge of the drawer front. If not level, gently tap the drawer side with a rubber mallet to induce a slight shift. Re‑check after tapping. Acceptable deviation: 0.0 mm over 300 mm.
7 Torque all fasteners and final test — Using a torque wrench, tighten all slide fasteners to 4.0 ± 0.3 N·m. Cycle the drawer 10 times. The drawer must open fully with a soft stop and exhibit no more than 2 mm side‑to‑side play when fully extended. Record torque values on the work order.
