Purpose

To establish a standardized verification protocol for production drill jigs used to position drawer slide mounting holes. This procedure ensures that every jig produces hole patterns within ±.005" of the nominal specification, directly supporting interchangeable slide assembly across cabinet boxes and face frames. Eliminating pattern variability reduces rework, scrap, and field service calls caused by binding slides or misaligned screws.

Scope

Applies to all machinists, setup technicians, and quality inspectors responsible for fabricating, modifying, or verifying drawer slide drilling jigs. Covers jigs used on CNC routers, point-to-point machines, and manual drill presses for both face frame and frameless cabinet construction. This SOP governs the verification of hole center distances, edge distances from register surfaces, and overall squareness of the bushing row relative to the jig's reference edges. It does not cover the initial jig design or first-article CNC program verification.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout any power tools or machinery used to adjust or modify the jig before performing measurements with calipers or gauge pins.
  • PPEWear ANSI Z87.1 rated safety glasses to protect against metal shavings or debris from the jig plate or verification pins. Use cut-resistant gloves when handling fabricated steel jig assemblies.
  • LIFTUse a two-person lift or mechanical assist device for any jig exceeding 30 lbs to prevent musculoskeletal injury during transfer to the inspection surface.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Clean and Inspect Surface & Bushings. Wipe down the jig base plate and all drill bushings with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove dust, chips, or adhesive residue. Visually inspect each bushing for signs of wear, cracking, or internal obstructions. Reject any jig with damaged bushings before proceeding.
2 Zero Caliper & Measure Edge Distances. Place the jig on the certified granite surface plate. Using the plate as a reference, zero the digital caliper. Measure the distance from the jig's front register edge to the center of the first bushing. Record the measurement. The nominal distance must be within ±.005" of the print or CAD specification.
3 Verify Bushing-to-Bushing Center Distances. Insert precision ground gauge pins into the first and second bushings. Use the digital caliper to measure the center-to-center distance across the outside of the pins, then subtract one pin diameter. Repeat for all mounting hole pairs in the pattern. Tolerances must hold at ±.004".
4 Check Squareness of Bushing Row. Mount a .001" test indicator in a magnetic base and sweep along the top surface of the gauge pins inserted into the bushings. Compare the indicated total indicator runout (TIR) against the jig's precision-ground reference side edge. Acceptable sweep deviation is less than .003" over a 12" span.
5 Pattern Match to Manufacturer Spec. Using a known-good drawer slide sample, temporarily clamp the slide to the jig's register surfaces. Verify that all screw holes in the slide align concentrically with the jig bushings without binding. Any misalignment or visual step mismatch requires immediate jig rejection and routing to rework.
6 Document and Tag. Record all measured values on the standardized verification checklist. If all dimensions fall within the specified tolerances, affix a "Verified" tag to the jig complete with the inspector's initials and the current date. If out of tolerance, tag the jig as "Needs Rework" and place it in the designated quarantine area.
7 Final Go/No-Go Gage. Run the manufacturer-specific Go/No-Go gage through the critical mounting slots or holes of the jig. The Go end must fully engage without force; the No-Go end must not enter. This confirms that the slide's mounting studs or screws will pass cleanly during production assembly.
