This standard operating procedure establishes a reliable measurement method to verify the positional accuracy of shelf pin holes on vertical uprights. Accurate hole placement is critical for ensuring square shelf assembly, proper load distribution, consistent spacing between levels, and overall rack stability. Deviations beyond the specified tolerance can lead to binding of beam connectors, reduced storage capacity, and potential structural hazards.
This SOP applies to all fabricated or procured shelf upright components used in pallet racking, cantilever shelving, and industrial storage systems. It covers measurement of hole center-to-center spacing along the vertical axis, hole diameter consistency, and horizontal alignment across paired uprights. This procedure does not apply to customer-assembled shelving without access to the unpackaged uprights, nor to structural modifications performed after installation.
- Lockout/tagout any powered drilling, punching, or forming machinery before performing manual measurements near moving parts.
- Wear safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves when handling metal uprights with sharp edges or burrs.
- If measuring on elevated racking, use a stable ladder or lift platform, never overreach, and maintain three points of contact.
- Digital caliper (0–6 in / 0–150 mm, 0.01 mm resolution)
- Steel tape measure (3 m / 10 ft)
- Pin hole diameter plug gauge set (or calibrated pin gauge)
- Center punch or scribe for marking non-conformances
- Flashlight for shadow inspection of hole edges
