Purpose

This standard operating procedure establishes a reliable measurement method to verify the positional accuracy of shelf pin holes on vertical uprights. Accurate hole placement is critical for ensuring square shelf assembly, proper load distribution, consistent spacing between levels, and overall rack stability. Deviations beyond the specified tolerance can lead to binding of beam connectors, reduced storage capacity, and potential structural hazards.

Scope

This SOP applies to all fabricated or procured shelf upright components used in pallet racking, cantilever shelving, and industrial storage systems. It covers measurement of hole center-to-center spacing along the vertical axis, hole diameter consistency, and horizontal alignment across paired uprights. This procedure does not apply to customer-assembled shelving without access to the unpackaged uprights, nor to structural modifications performed after installation.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout any powered drilling, punching, or forming machinery before performing manual measurements near moving parts.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves when handling metal uprights with sharp edges or burrs.
  • ELEVIf measuring on elevated racking, use a stable ladder or lift platform, never overreach, and maintain three points of contact.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Digital caliper (0–6 in / 0–150 mm, 0.01 mm resolution)
  • Steel tape measure (3 m / 10 ft)
  • Pin hole diameter plug gauge set (or calibrated pin gauge)
  • Center punch or scribe for marking non-conformances
  • Flashlight for shadow inspection of hole edges
  • Inspection checklist or data collection sheet
  • Engineering drawing with specified hole locations and tolerances

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Place the upright on a flat, clean inspection surface. Reference the engineering drawing for specified hole diameters, center-to-center distances, and tolerance limits.
2 Identify the primary datum hole (typically the first hole from the top or bottom) and mark it with a pencil or removable tape as the zero reference.
3 Using a digital caliper, measure the center-to-center distance between successive holes along the vertical axis. Place the caliper jaws exactly at the hole centers. Record each measurement on the inspection sheet. Repeat for all holes in the column.
4 Insert the appropriate plug gauge into each hole to verify diameter tolerance. The gauge should pass through with light resistance but not be loose. Note any holes that are oversized, undersized, or out-of-round.
5 If paired uprights are specified (left and right), lay them side by side with the datum holes aligned. Use the caliper to measure the vertical offset between corresponding holes on both uprights. The offset must not exceed ±0.5 mm.
6 Mark any hole that exceeds the tolerance (e.g., center distance deviation > ±0.2 mm, diameter out of tolerance) with a red scribe on the face of the upright. Attach a non-conformance tag and enter the data into the discrepancy log.
7 Re-measure the critical datum hole and the worst-case deviation to confirm repeatability. Complete the inspection report, sign off, and route accepted uprights to assembly. Quarantine rejected components for rework or scrap.
