Construction Waste Sorting On Site
This standard operating procedure defines the proper method for sorting construction and demolition (C&D) waste directly at the job site. Following these steps ensures regulatory compliance, maximizes recycling revenue, and reduces landfill tipping fees.
To establish a consistent, safe, and efficient method for sorting C&D waste streams on site. Proper sorting reduces disposal costs, meets municipal recycling mandates, and improves the project's environmental scorecard. This SOP supports both regulatory compliance and diversion target reporting.
This procedure applies to all construction, renovation, and demolition projects managed by Ryxen's operations partners. It covers sorting of wood, metal, concrete, drywall, cardboard/paper, plastics, and hazardous materials. It does not cover off-site sorting at transfer stations or landfill operations. All crew members, subcontractors, and waste haulers must adhere to this SOP.
- Wear approved personal protective equipment at all times: hard hat, safety glasses, high‑visibility vest, cut‑resistant gloves, steel‑toe boots. Ear protection when using power tools.
- Identify and segregate hazardous materials (asbestos, paint, solvents, batteries) immediately. Handle only with appropriate training and disposal permits. Mark containment area with warning tape.
- Use mechanical aids (wheelbarrows, carts, telehandler) for heavy loads. Never manually lift items over 23 kg. Practice proper lifting technique: bend at knees, keep load close.
- Color-coded roll-off containers or bins (1 per waste stream)
- Clear signage & labelling (bilingual as required)
- Wheelbarrow, shovels, rakes, and pitchforks
- Sledgehammer or demolition cutters for breaking large pieces
- Magnetic separator / hand magnet (for ferrous metals)
- Hand compactor or portable baler for cardboard/plastics
- Personal protective equipment (see Safety Precautions)
- Waste log sheets or digital capture device (tablet)
- Hazardous waste containment (lockable drum, warning tape)
