Purpose

This procedure ensures that fleet vehicles are cleaned and degreased in a consistent, safe, and environmentally responsible manner. Regular washing removes corrosive road salts, chemical residues, and abrasive grit that accelerate paint degradation and undercarriage rust. Proper degreasing of the drivetrain, suspension, and exhaust components reduces fire risk, improves heat dissipation, and allows for accurate visual inspections during preventive maintenance. Adherence to this SOP minimizes liability, extends service life, and supports resale value of the fleet.

Scope

This SOP applies to all light‑duty fleet vehicles (vans, pickup trucks, service trucks) operated under Ryxen‑managed logistics and field installation contracts. It covers exterior body panel washing, wheel well cleaning, and undercarriage degreasing. The procedure excludes engine bay steam cleaning (separate SOP) and interior detailing. Frequency requirements: weekly for vehicles operating in coastal or heavy‑salt regions; bi‑weekly for inland fleets; immediately following any off‑road exposure or obvious grease leakage.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout: Ensure engine is off, keys removed from ignition, and battery disconnected if pressure washing near electrical harnesses. For hybrid/electric vehicles, reference high‑voltage safety protocols before spraying.
  • PPEWear safety goggles, chemical‑resistant gloves, non‑slip boots, and a waterproof apron. Use a respirator if using solvent‑based degreasers. Hearing protection required if pressure washer exceeds 80 dB.
  • SLIPWet surfaces create extreme slip hazards. Post wet‑floor signs, ensure adequate drainage, and use anti‑fatigue mats. Never work alone when using pressure washers above 2000 psi.
  • CHEMStore degreasers and cleaning agents in labelled, closed containers away from drains. Have a spill kit available. Do not mix chemicals—follow manufacturer dilution ratios exactly.
  • HOTAllow exhaust systems and brake components to cool completely (minimum 30 minutes) before applying degreaser. Hot surfaces can cause chemical flash fires or steam burns.

  • Pressure washer (1500–2500 psi) with adjustable nozzle, hot‑water capable
  • Biodegradable, non‑corrosive industrial degreaser (pH 7–9)
  • pH‑neutral automotive shampoo/foam wash
  • Stiff‑bristled undercarriage brush, detail brushes, and a telescopic wand attachment
  • Two 5‑gallon buckets, one for wash solution, one for rinse
  • Microfiber mitt and drying towels (separate for paint and glass)
  • Spill containment kit, storm drain covers (if washing outdoors)
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) as per safety card above
  • Vehicle inspection checklist and digital camera for documenting damage

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Park and prepare vehicle. Position on level, well‑drained surface. Engage parking brake, turn off engine, and allow exhaust to cool. Remove loose debris from cargo bed/box. Document any pre‑existing damage in the inspection form.
2 Pre‑rinse exterior and undercarriage. Using a pressure washer at 1500–2000 psi, thoroughly rinse the entire body and undercarriage with water only. Avoid direct spray onto electrical connectors, air intakes, and exhaust tips. Focus on wheel wells and frame crevices.
3 Apply heavy‑duty degreaser. Using a low‑pressure applicator, coat the undercarriage, suspension, and wheel wells with industrial degreaser. Do not apply to hot surfaces. Allow a dwell time of 5–10 minutes—longer for caked‑on grease. Re‑apply to drying areas.
4 Agitate stubborn deposits. Using a stiff‑bristled brush or undercarriage wand, scrub areas with oil residue, asphalt, or mud deposits. Pay particular attention to differential covers, transmission pans, leaf spring pockets, and around U‑joints.
5 Pressure wash with hot water. Switch to a fan nozzle set at 2000–2500 psi. Wash from bottom up: undercarriage → wheel wells → lower body panels → upper panels. Overlap passes by 50% to prevent streaking. Rinse thoroughly—any residual degreaser can damage seals.
6 Apply foam wash (optional but recommended). Fill foam cannon with pH‑neutral shampoo. Coat the entire bodywork. Let it cling for 2 minutes, then rinse using a wide fan spray. This step neutralises any remaining degreaser and reduces water spotting.
7 Final rinse and inspection. Perform a final rinse with deionised or low‑fluoride water. Walk around the vehicle and visually inspect the undercarriage for any lingering grease, oil, or fluid leaks. Use a hand mirror for hard‑to‑see areas. Photograph any concerns and add them to the fleet report.
8 Dry and post‑wash tasks. Air dry the body or lightly absorb moisture with a microfiber towel on glass and glossy surfaces. Remove and properly clean all equipment. Collect wastewater and dispose according to local by‑laws. Restore the work area to a clean, dry state. Complete the vehicle wash log.
