Purpose

This procedure defines the safe, consistent method for replacing weather seals on pit-style dock levelers. Proper sealing reduces heating/cooling losses, prevents water and pest entry, and extends the life of the dock leveler structure. Adherence to this SOP ensures that replacements are performed to manufacturer tolerances and facility safety standards.

Scope

This SOP applies to all standard pit-style dock levelers with bolted-on or snap-in weather seal assemblies (compression or blade-style). It covers removal of old seals, inspection and cleaning of mounting channels, measurement, cutting, and installation of new seals. It does not cover structural repairs, hydraulic system maintenance, or replacement of dock bumpers. Personnel performing this task must be trained in lockout/tagout and basic mechanical installation.

Safety Precautions

LOTOLock out and tag out the dock leveler per facility LOTO procedure before beginning any work. Verify zero energy state (no electrical, pneumatic, or hydraulic power). Do not rely on the leveler's limit switches.
PPEWear safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, and steel-toed boots. Use extreme caution when using a utility knife; always retract the blade when not in use. Be aware of pinch points between the leveler and dock pit edges.

Procedure: Step-by-Step

1 Lockout/Tagout & Prepare Area. Perform lockout/tagout on the dock leveler. Verify zero energy state. Post warning tags. Clear the dock pit of debris and ensure no vehicles are approaching. Set up a clean work area.

2 Remove the Old Weather Seal. Inspect the existing seal. Using a utility knife, cut the seal at both ends and along any adhesive tacks. Insert a small pry bar under the seal and gently lift it out of the mounting channel. Remove all fragments. Dispose of seal material.

3 Clean the Mounting Channel. Scrub the channel with a wire brush to remove rust, old adhesive, and debris. Wipe down with a rag dampened with degreaser. Allow the channel to dry completely. A clean surface ensures proper adhesion and seal fit.

4 Measure and Cut New Seal. Measure the width of the dock leveler opening. Transfer the measurement to the new seal material, adding 1/2 inch (12 mm) for compression fit. Use a square to mark a straight cut line. Cut with a sharp utility knife on a cutting mat or clean surface.

5 Install the New Weather Seal. For compression seals: slide the seal into the channel and press firmly by hand, working from one end to the other. For blade-style seals: align the lip of the seal with the channel and tap it into place using a rubber mallet. Ensure the seal is fully seated along the entire length. Verify that the seal contacts the dock bumpers evenly without gaps.

6 Test and Close Out. Remove lockout/tagout. Cycle the dock leveler through its full range of motion (raise and lower). Verify that the new seal does not bind, pinch, or obstruct the leveler's movement. Clean up all tools and material scraps. Record the replacement date, seal type, and technician in the facility maintenance log.
