Purpose

To establish a standardized, repeatable method for engaging loading dock vehicle restraints that ensures the trailer remains locked to the dock throughout the entire loading/unloading cycle. Proper engagement eliminates the risk of trailer separation, worker injury, and product damage caused by premature drive‑away. This SOP is part of a site‑wide yard safety program.

Scope

This procedure applies to all powered dock‑leveler / vehicle‑restraint systems (Rite‑Hite, Kelley, Blue Giant, or equivalent) installed at company‑operated warehouses and logistics yards. It covers the full cycle from dock preparation to disengagement. All forklift operators, dock attendants, and yard drivers must follow it. Exceptions require written supervisor approval and documented hazard assessment.

Safety Precautions

LOTOLockout/tagout all dock equipment before performing any maintenance or cleaning. Never bypass restraint limit switches or pressure sensors.
PPEWear high‑visibility vest, steel‑toed boots, and safety glasses at all times in the dock area. Hearing protection required when dock alarms or horns are active.
CHKAlways verify trailer wheels are chocked on both sides before approaching the dock. Chocks must be removed only after restraint is disengaged and driver signals intent to pull away.
CLRKeep hands, feet, and loose clothing clear of the restraint arm and dock leveler pinch points. Never reach into the pit while the system is powered.

Procedure: Step-by-Step

1 Confirm dock leveler is fully lowered and secured — Verify the dock leveler is in its stored (lowered) position with lip retracted. The trailer must be fully backed against the dock seal before proceeding.

2 Locate the vehicle restraint control panel — Typically mounted on the interior dock wall beside the door. Ensure power indicator light is solid green. If red/flashing, do not proceed — contact maintenance.

3 Activate the restraint mechanism — Press and hold the ‘engage’ button. Observe the restraint arm/hook rise and lock against the trailer’s ICC bar. Continue holding until the ‘engaged’ indicator (usually red) stops flashing and becomes solid.

4 Perform visual and physical verification — Visually confirm the restraint hook is securely hooked onto the ICC bar. Use a mirror if necessary. Signal the driver to apply a light tug — the trailer must not move. The engaged indicator must remain solid.

5 Open dock door and deploy leveler — Once restraint is verified, open the rolling door. Use the dock leveler pendant to raise the platform and extend the lip onto the trailer bed. The leveler lip must rest fully on the trailer floor, not on the ICC bar.

6 Commence loading/unloading operations — Proceed with material handling. The restraint must remain engaged for the entire duration. If any movement is detected, stop immediately, sound the alarm, and re‑verify the restraint.

7 Disengage after completion — Lower the dock leveler, close the door. Press the ‘disengage’ button on the restraint control panel. Wait until the indicator shows ‘disengaged’ (usually green). Confirm the restraint arm has fully retracted. Remove wheel chocks only after disengagement.
