Purpose

To outline the correct procedure for retrieving diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from a trailer ABS system and performing sensor cleaning to restore proper braking function. This SOP ensures consistent, repeatable diagnostics and reduces the risk of unnecessary component replacement.

Scope

This procedure applies to all heavy‑duty trailers equipped with Bendix or Meritor WABCO ABS systems using standard J1939 or J1708 diagnostic interfaces. It covers code retrieval, sensor cleaning, and verification. Full sensor replacement or ECU reprogramming is outside the scope of this document.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOPark the trailer on level ground, apply wheel chocks, and release all air brake pressure before connecting diagnostic equipment. Never work under a raised trailer without properly rated jack stands.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and nitrile gloves. Brake cleaner is flammable and a skin irritant — work in a well‑ventilated area and keep away from ignition sources.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare trailer and work area. Park on level ground, apply wheel chocks both front and rear of all axles. Release the trailer park brake to de‑pressurize the air system. Verify the ignition is OFF.
2 Connect diagnostic tool. Locate the ABS diagnostic connector (6‑pin or 9‑pin Deutsch, typically near the front of the trailer or inside a junction box). Plug in your compatible scan tool.
3 Retrieve fault codes. Power on the scan tool and select the correct ABS platform (Bendix / Meritor WABCO). Initiate a full system scan and record all active and stored DTCs. Note the wheel position(s) associated with each code.
4 Interpret codes. Cross‑reference the recorded codes with the manufacturer’s service manual. Common codes indicate “wheel speed sensor circuit fault,” “signal erratic,” or “air gap too large.” Determine if sensor cleaning is appropriate.
5 Access the sensor. Jack up the affected wheel end and place jack stands under the frame. Remove the wheel and tyre assembly. Locate the ABS sensor — typically mounted on the axle flange or inside the hub assembly.
6 Clean the sensor. Carefully remove the sensor retaining bolt or clip. Pull the sensor straight out. Inspect the sensing face for metal debris, grease, or rust. Spray brake cleaner onto a lint‑free towel and wipe the sensor face clean. Do not use abrasive materials — the ferrite core is fragile.
7 Reinstall and route wiring. Reinsert the sensor and torque the retaining bolt to the manufacturer’s specification (typically 7–10 ft‑lb). Route the sensor cable away from brake lines, suspension components, and any sharp edges. Secure with cable ties. Remount the wheel and lower the trailer.
8 Clear codes and verify. Reconnect the diagnostic tool. Clear all DTCs from the ABS ECU. Run a system test to confirm no new codes appear. If the original code persists, further electrical diagnosis (voltage supply/continuity) is required — sensor replacement may be needed.
9 Road test (if applicable). Drive the trailer at low speed (10–15 km/h) on a safe paved surface. Verify that the ABS warning lamp illuminates at startup and extinguishes after reaching 5 km/h. Ensure the brakes respond normally without unexpected lock‑up.
