Material Overview & Common Uses

75/25 Argon/CO₂ (commonly called C25) is the standard shielding gas for gas metal arc welding (GMAW) of carbon steel in Canadian fabrication shops. The blend provides a stable arc, good wetting action, and deeper penetration than pure CO₂, while maintaining lower spatter levels. It is the go-to choice for general fabrication, structural steel, automotive repair, and light-to-medium gauge sheet metal work. Typical applications include welding A36, 1018, 1020, and 44W steel in thicknesses from 0.035" to 1".

The gas is supplied in high-pressure steel cylinders (typically 80, 125, 150, 200, or 300 ft³ water capacity) with a CGA 580 valve connection. In Canada, cylinders are often painted grey with a green band to indicate the 75/25 mix, though colour coding varies by supplier. The gas is non-flammable and non-toxic, but can displace oxygen in confined spaces.
