Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to provide a clear, repeatable procedure for installing upright protection guards on pallet racking systems. Proper installation prevents catastrophic rack failure due to impact, reduces downtime from collisions, and ensures compliance with occupational health and safety regulations (CSA Z432, WorkSafeBC).

Scope

This SOP applies to all warehouse personnel responsible for installing upright protection guards on pallet racking systems. It covers guard selection, site preparation, anchoring, assembly, and final inspection. This procedure does not cover retrofitting of damaged racking (refer to racking repair SOP).

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout all powered material handling equipment (forklifts, pallet jacks) in the installation zone before beginning work.
  • PPEWear steel-toed boots, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, and work gloves. Use hearing protection when operating impact tools.
  • TEAMAt least two workers must be present to handle heavy guard components (each guard section may weigh >50 kg). Use mechanical lifting aids when necessary.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Upright protection guard kit (including base plate, upright section, bolts, expansion anchors)
  • Impact wrench with torque settings (capable of 120 N·m)
  • Level (1 m or longer)
  • Measuring tape and chalk line
  • Personal protective equipment (as per safety section)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Inspect the racking bay and identify the target upright. Ensure the area is clear of obstructions and the floor is clean and dry.
2 Mark the floor for guard placement using chalk. Allow a minimum of 100 mm clearance from the upright base plate to avoid interference with racking foot anchoring.
3 Position the guard base plate on the floor marks. Align the anchor holes with pre-drilled floor anchor points. If floor anchors are not present, drill holes according to manufacturer specifications (depth and diameter).
4 Insert expansion anchors into the pre-drilled holes and torque to the manufacturer’s specification (typically 80–120 N·m). Verify anchor pull‑out resistance using a calibrated torque wrench.
5 Attach the guard upright to the base plate using the provided bracket kit. Secure all bolts to the specified torque. Use a level to check vertical alignment; adjust shims if necessary.
6 Perform a final visual and torque check on all fasteners. Remove all tools and debris from the area. Record the installation details (date, installer name, torque values) on the racking maintenance log.
