Material Overview & Common Uses

Natural soapstone, geologically classified as steatite, is a talc-schist metamorphic rock composed primarily of talc (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2), with varying amounts of chlorite, magnesite, and other minerals. It is prized for its high heat resistance, chemical inertness, and soft, non-porous surface. In Canadian fabrication shops, soapstone is commonly used for kitchen countertops, laboratory benchtops, fireplace surrounds, woodstove panels, sink basins, and architectural cladding. Its ability to withstand thermal shock and resist staining from acids and alkalis makes it a preferred material for both residential and industrial applications.

Soapstone is typically sourced from quarries in Quebec, Vermont, Brazil, and Finland, with Canadian fabricators often favoring domestic or near-domestic slabs to reduce lead times and freight costs. The material is supplied as rough-cut slabs or finished slabs with a honed or leathered surface. Due to its softness (Mohs hardness 1–2.5), soapstone is easily scratched but can be sanded and oiled to restore its appearance. It is not recommended for high-traffic flooring or heavy-use cutting boards without careful consideration of wear patterns.
