Its ability to withstand thermal shock and resist staining from acids and alkalis makes it a preferred material for both residential and industrial applications.
Soapstone is typically sourced from quarries in Quebec, Vermont, Brazil, and Finland, with Canadian fabricators often favoring domestic or near-domestic slabs to reduce lead times and freight costs. The material is supplied as rough-cut slabs or finished slabs with a honed or leathered surface. Due to its softness (Mohs hardness 1–2.5), soapstone is easily scratched but can be sanded and oiled to restore its appearance.
