Material Overview & Common Uses

Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), also known as Tulip Poplar or Yellow Poplar, is a diffuse-porous hardwood native to eastern North America. It is one of the most commonly used hardwoods in Canadian woodworking and fabrication due to its excellent machinability, dimensional stability, and low cost relative to other hardwoods. Poplar is typically pale yellow to greenish-brown with occasional purple or blue streaks (mineral stain). It has a straight, uniform grain and a fine, even texture. Common uses include: painted furniture, cabinet frames, drawer sides, interior millwork, mouldings, trim, shelving, and as a core stock for veneered panels. It is also widely used for prototyping and jig/fixture construction in machining operations. Poplar is not typically used for exterior applications due to low natural decay resistance.
