Purpose

To establish a standardized process for managing, tracking, and utilizing offcuts from sheet goods (plywood, MDF, melamine, etc.) to minimize waste, reduce material costs, and maintain inventory accuracy. This procedure ensures that usable offcuts are systematically recovered, labelled, stored, and reintegrated into production instead of being discarded or lost in the workflow.

Scope

This procedure applies to all warehouse personnel and production teams handling sheet goods in the facility. It covers offcut identification, measurement, labeling, storage, and retrieval for reuse. It excludes scrap material smaller than 150 mm in any dimension—those should be sent to recycling or disposal through the established waste stream.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout on panel saws and cutting equipment before performing maintenance or clearing jams. Only qualified personnel may override LOTO devices.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4 minimum) and impact-rated safety glasses when handling offcuts. Use dust mask if sanding or cutting reclaimed material. Hearing protection required in active cutting zones.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Pencil and measuring tape (metric / imperial markings)
  • Label printer or preprinted offcut labels (waterproof, adhesive)
  • Barcode scanner or mobile device with inventory app (optional but recommended)
  • Offcut storage rack or bin system (horizontal flat storage preferred)
  • Hammer and nail punch for removing staples/nails

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Inspect the offcut immediately after cutting. Use the nail punch and hammer to remove any remaining nails, staples, or debris. Confirm the material is free from splits, rot, or delamination that would make it unusable.
2 Measure the usable dimensions (length × width) to the nearest 1/4 inch (6 mm). Record measurements directly on the label or in your tracking system. Include material grade and thickness.
3 Assign a unique ID using the format OFC-YYYYMMDD-### (e.g., OFC-20260315-042). Write or print the ID on a waterproof label and affix it to the offcut in a visible, corner location.
4 Update the inventory log (digital or manual) with the offcut ID, dimensions, material grade, and exact storage location (e.g., Zone C, Rack 4, Bin 2). Scan the barcode if using a scanning system.
5 Store the offcut in the designated area. Place it flat on a level surface, separated by material type (plywood, MDF, melamine) and size. Ensure the area is dry and free from dust accumulation.
6 When an offcut is issued for a production job, retrieve it using the tracking system. Update the status to “consumed” and remove the label. This cycle ensures real‑time accuracy for future cuts.
