Dock Appointment
A dock appointment is a pre-arranged time slot for a carrier or truck to arrive at a specific dock door or handling resource for loading or unloading freight. It records planned and executed start/end times, assigns the door, carrier, trailer, and load details, and helps control arrival flow, reduce congestion, and improve labor and equipment planning in warehouses and distribution centers.
On a manufacturing shop floor and in the adjoining warehouse, dock appointments act as a capacity-reservation mechanism for inbound raw materials, components, packaging, and finished goods. Receiving leads review the appointment's time window, dock/door assignment, carrier identity, trailer/license plate, load type, and expected duration before the truck arrives. When the driver checks in, gate staff validate the appointment against the ASN and physical trailer, then direct the unit to the correct door so unloading starts immediately. This practice prevents multiple carriers from converging on a single dock, staggers the flow of inbound freight, and lets planners match forklifts, pallet jacks, and inspection labor to the booked workload. Because the appointment links the physical receipt to the system receipt in WMS/ERP, lot/batch capture, inventory posting, and staging for production line feed stay synchronized. The result is shorter driver dwell time, lower detention risk, and stable material availability for production schedules.
Is a dock appointment the same as dock scheduling?
No. A dock appointment is the individual reserved slot for a specific carrier at a specific door and time, while dock scheduling is the broader process or system that allocates and manages those slots across doors, carriers, and time windows.
What master data drives dock appointment setup in ERP/WMS?
Typical drivers include location data, door/loading-point attributes, yard or gate definitions, carrier data, load type, and time-window rules. SAP specifically requires configuring location master data and attributes for loading points, docking locations, gates, and yards.
How does a dock appointment affect inventory accuracy?
It aligns the physical receipt event with the system receipt event, reducing timing gaps between arrival, unloading, inspection, and inventory posting. This synchronization is critical for raw-material availability and production scheduling.
