Purpose

This procedure defines the daily visual inspection steps for a Dok Lok (or equivalent) loading dock trailer restraint. The goal is to identify mechanical wear, structural damage, or sensor misalignment that could cause the trailer to separate from the dock during loading, leading to serious injury or equipment damage. A passed inspection ensures the restraint is safe for service; any failures must be tagged out and reported immediately.

Scope

This SOP applies to all dock operators, maintenance technicians, and safety inspectors responsible for the pre‑shift inspection of mechanical trailer restraints installed at warehouse loading docks. It covers visual inspection only — no component disassembly or electrical troubleshooting. The procedure is intended for facilities operating under WorkSafeBC jurisdiction, but can be adapted to local regulations. Trailers must be absent during inspection; a training trailer may be used for functional testing.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout — Isolate electrical and pneumatic power to the restraint system before any inspection work. Apply personal lock and tag on the disconnect switch. Verify zero energy state by attempting to actuate the control pendant.
  • PPEWear CSA‑approved safety glasses, high‑visibility vest, and steel‑toed boots. Gloves with cut protection are recommended when handling metal edges or debris.
  • PINCHKeep hands and tools clear of the locking mechanism during manual movement. Use a non‑conductive rod to probe, never fingers.
  • AVOIDDo not stand under the restraint unit while it is mounted overhead. Dock levelers should be locked out if the restraint is positioned beneath the leveler lip.
  • TAGAny restraint that fails inspection must be tagged “DO NOT OPERATE” immediately and reported to the dock supervisor.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout Isolation — Place the dock restraint in the fully unlatched (home) position. Turn off the control panel disconnect switch and apply your personal lock and danger tag. Verify zero energy by pressing the “engage” button on the pendant — no movement should occur. If pneumatic, close the air supply valve and bleed residual pressure.
2 External Structural Inspection — Using the flashlight, inspect the restraint housing, mounting brackets, and concrete anchors for cracks, deformation, corrosion, or loose fasteners. Look for signs of impact damage. Document any damage with a photo and note on the log.
3 Latching Mechanism Check — Manually rotate the locking hook or bar (wear gloves). Verify full travel from retracted to extended position without binding, sticking, or excessive play. Check pivot pins for wear (max 0.5 mm play). Inspect return springs for breaks or loss of tension. Ensure all cotter pins and retaining clips are present.
4 Sensor & Indicator Verification — With the restraint still isolated, clean any photo‑eye lenses or limit switch plungers with a dry cloth. Re‑energize the unit temporarily (only after step 3 is documented). Activate the pendant to cycle the restraint; confirm the red “unlatched” and green “latched” indicator lights illuminate correctly. Listen for any unusual grinding or clicking from the actuator.
5 Functional Cycle Test (with training trailer) — Position an empty trailer against the dock bumpers. Cycle the restraint: engage, hold for 5 seconds, disengage. Observe that the locking hook fully captures the trailer’s ICC bar and releases cleanly. Verify the dock light signal changes from red to green and back. Repeat three times. No hesitation or partial latching permitted.
6 Logging & Reporting — Record the inspection date, time, inspector name, model/serial number, and result (Pass / Fail with details) in the daily dock safety log. If any critical defects were found (structural crack, broken spring, sensor failure), tag out the restraint and notify the supervisor immediately. Attach photos to the report.
