Location Accuracy

Location accuracy is the degree to which a tracked asset's reported position matches its true physical position, usually expressed as an error radius in meters or as zone-level confidence around a reader, dock door, aisle, bin, or machine. It is not the same as precision: accuracy measures closeness to the true location, while precision measures consistency of repeated measurements.

In a manufacturing or warehousing environment, location accuracy determines whether the system knows an item is at a specific dock door, staging lane, line-side supermarket, rack position, or WIP buffer rather than merely somewhere in the building. Passive HF/UHF RFID typically reports that a tag was read by a particular reader, placing the asset inside that reader's zone. Passive UHF RTLS can localize to a one-meter cube, while UWB reaches about ten centimeters under favorable conditions. These differences directly affect receiving verification, putaway validation, cycle counting, kit assembly confirmation, and line-side replenishment. When geolocation-style tracking is used, the system returns a point with an uncertainty radius, and decisions must respect that radius. Required accuracy depends on use case: dock-door confirmation may only need reader-zone accuracy, while bin-level compliance or high-value tooling tracking demands RTLS/UWB-grade localization. Validation should compare reported positions against surveyed ground truth and analyze error cumulative distributions.

Operational Failure Matrix
Risk LevelOperational Pitfall Description
⚠️ Warning 1Reader Zone Mistaken for Exact Position: A passive RFID read only means the tag entered the reader's zone, so pallets can be logged while still on a truck or in a neighboring lane, causing false receiving confidence.
⚠️ Warning 2Broad Geolocation for Bin-Level Decisions: Network-based location systems have error radii of tens to hundreds of meters, far too coarse for bin-level inventory, WIP staging, or pick-face confirmation. The records look valid but are operationally unusable.
⚠️ Warning 3Ignoring Multipath and Coverage Gaps: Metal racking and machinery reflect signals and distort UWB/RTLS timing, so nominal accuracy hides large outliers that break receiving, kitting, or replenishment workflows unless validation is done against ground truth.
Technical FAQs
Is location accuracy the same as inventory accuracy?

No. Inventory accuracy is whether the counted quantity matches the physical quantity; location accuracy is whether the system records the correct physical position of the item.

What does 'accuracy radius' mean?

It is the uncertainty zone around the reported point; the true item location is expected to fall somewhere inside that radius, not exactly at the center point.

What accuracy is typical for warehouse RTLS?

Passive HF/UHF RFID usually identifies a read zone rather than coordinates, passive UHF RTLS can be around a one-meter cube, active RTLS is often around 3 meters, and UWB can reach about 10 centimeters under favorable conditions.
