Real Time Location System

Quick Technical FAQs
Is RTLS the same as RFID?

No. RTLS is the broader location-tracking outcome; RFID can be one of the underlying identification technologies, but RTLS typically combines tags, anchors, and positioning software to calculate location continuously.

What accuracy should a plant expect from RTLS?

Accuracy depends on the radio stack and installation. Vendor materials describe room-level to sub-meter tracking for BLE/UWB deployments and centimeter-level accuracy for some UWB systems under controlled conditions.

What assets are best suited for RTLS?

High-value, frequently moved, or hard-to-find assets such as forklifts, carts, totes, tools, pallets, WIP, and sensitive raw materials that require rapid traceability.

Primary Definition & Context

A Real-Time Location System (RTLS) is an indoor positioning and tracking system that automatically determines the location of assets, people, or equipment within a defined facility using tags, fixed receivers/anchors, and software that processes location data in real time or near real time. It is used in manufacturing and warehousing to track pallets, WIP, tools, forklifts, and personnel, reducing search time and improving workflow decisions.

On the shop floor, a tagged pallet of raw material enters receiving and anchors detect its movement, updating its position in software without manual scanning at each handoff. The material can then be routed to quarantine, staging, line-side replenishment, or storage, and planners see exactly where WIP and tools are in real time. In warehousing, RTLS continuously shows high-value inventory, equipment, and trucks inside the building, supporting slotting, pick-path optimization, dock coordination, and reducing asset loss or search time. The typical architecture uses tags attached to objects, fixed receivers/anchors throughout the facility, and middleware that calculates and visualizes positions; technologies include UWB, BLE, Wi-Fi, RFID-derived approaches, or LTE-based tags depending on accuracy and infrastructure needs. Accuracy ranges from room-level to centimeter-level, and this visibility converts location data into actionable control for inventory, equipment utilization, and process timing, reducing manual counts, idle time, and coordination errors.

Critical Pitfalls

Blind spots from poor anchor layout: If anchors are placed too sparsely or blocked by metal racking without coverage testing, positions get misread and moves through receiving, staging, or choke points go undetected, creating false confidence in inventory location.

Tag-to-asset mismatch: If tags stay on reusable containers instead of the actual material lot and are not reassigned at repacking, the RTLS record follows the container while the ERP/WMS follows the lot, causing stock variance and traceability breaks.

Latency and bypassed workflow steps: If the floor team skips tagged steps or software updates too slowly, the displayed location lags behind reality, leading to missed replenishment windows, misrouted WIP, and bottlenecks at line-side supply points.
