Purpose

To verify that the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) and all connected initiating devices (smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual pull stations) and notification appliances (strobes, horns) are functioning correctly. This monthly walk test ensures early detection of faults, compliance with code requirements, and reliability of the fire alarm system in an industrial setting.

Scope

This procedure applies to all Fire Alarm Control Panels installed in industrial facilities within the scope of the facility's fire safety plan. It covers visual inspection, battery load testing, alarm activation and reset, and communication verification to the monitoring station. Excludes annual full‑function testing as required by NFPA 72, which must be performed by a certified fire protection contractor.

  • NFPAAlways notify the monitoring station and facility personnel before starting the test to prevent false dispatches. Obtain verbal confirmation from the monitoring station that the system is in test mode.
  • LOTOFor any work requiring contact with wiring or terminals inside the FACP cabinet, perform lockout/tagout on the building's fire alarm branch circuit. Only qualified electricians may open the panel.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and hearing protection when testing audible notification appliances. Use a ladder rated for your weight when reaching ceiling‑mounted detectors.
  • FIREKeep a minimum 10‑lb ABC fire extinguisher in the immediate area during testing. If an actual fire alarm occurs during the test, follow emergency response procedures immediately.
  • SYSDo not bypass any safety interlocks or disable the system for longer than necessary. After testing, ensure the system is fully restored to normal operation.

  • Digital multimeter (rated for battery voltage testing)

  • Safe ladder (Class I or II) for accessing ceiling‑mounted detectors
  • Spare backup batteries (lead‑acid or NiCd as per manufacturer spec)
  • Clean, lint‑free cloth and electronic contact cleaner

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Notify the monitoring station and facility personnel that a fire alarm walk test is in progress. Confirm the system is placed in test mode to prevent false dispatch.
2 Visually inspect the FACP cabinet for physical damage, corrosion, dust buildup, or loose wiring. Clean the cabinet vents and exterior with a dry cloth. Ensure the “AC Power” indicator is lit.
3 Test the backup battery voltage under load. Disconnect the AC supply, measure the battery voltage at the terminals using a multimeter, and reconnect AC. For lead‑acid batteries, replace if voltage < 11.6 VDC (for a 12 V system). Record the reading.
4 Activate a representative initiating device such as a manual pull station in a central location. Verify that the FACP displays the correct zone and device number, and that the alarm indicator (LED) lights up.
5 Confirm that all audible and visual notification appliances (strobes, horns) activate within 90 seconds of the alarm. Note any appliances that fail to operate or show inconsistent performance.
6 Silence the alarm using the “Silence” or “Acknowledge” button on the FACP. Then reset the panel. Verify that the system returns to normal status (no trouble or alarm LEDs).
7 Repeat the activation test for at least two additional detectors per floor or per zone. Select a mix of smoke detectors, heat detectors, and duct detectors (if present). Use the appropriate test magnet or canned aerosol smoke.
8 Test the communication link to the monitoring station. On the FACP, press the “Test” or “Signal” button (if equipped) or place a voice call to the monitoring station to confirm the signal is received. Ensure the panel indicates “Communications OK”.
9 Record all test results in the facility logbook or directly into the SafeDesk digital log. Include date, time, equipment tested, battery voltage readings, and any faults observed. Sign and date the entry.
10 If any failures are identified (e.g., non‑operating detector, low battery, communication error), tag out the affected zone or the entire panel, notify facility management, and contact a certified fire alarm contractor for repair. Do not leave the area unattended unless the system is fully functional.
