Purpose

To establish a consistent, measurable training process for all operators who perform manual lifting tasks. This procedure ensures every lift is planned, executed with proper body mechanics, and evaluated against a minimum competency threshold. The goal is to prevent acute back injuries and cumulative trauma disorders across the facility.

Scope

Applies to all production and warehouse personnel (including temporary staff) whose duties involve lifting objects heavier than 10 kg (22 lb) or requiring awkward postures. Covers initial certification, annual recertification, and any retraining following a lifting‑related incident or near‑miss. Excludes assisted mechanical lifts performed by powered equipment (forklift, crane, hoist).

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout any mechanical lift assist before inspection or adjustment. Do not bypass safety interlocks on vacuum lifters or balancers.
  • PPEOperator must wear steel‑toed boots, cut‑level‑2 gloves, and a high‑visibility vest. If load exceeds 23 kg, use an approved lifting belt (moderate support).
  • BIOReport any sharp edges, grease, or moisture on the load path immediately. Do not lift while fatigued or under the influence of any substance.

  • SafeLift evaluation checklist (form SF‑102) — print or digital via SafeDesk
  • Load sample set (5 kg, 10 kg, 23 kg, 35 kg) with marked centre of gravity
  • Ergonomic training mat / non‑slip floor marking

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre‑shift Hazard Scan — Walk the lifting zone. Identify slip/trip hazards, overhead obstructions, and load path restrictions. Tag any unsafe conditions using SafeDesk or the area Lockout Tagout register.
2 Load Assessment & Planning — Read the load weight and centre of gravity from the placard. If the load exceeds 23 kg (50 lb) or is an awkward shape, ensure a lifting aid (dolly, strap, vacuum lifter) is available and inspected. Plan the lift path to avoid sharp turns or blind corners.
3 Set Neutral Spine & Base of Support — Feet shoulder‑width apart, one foot slightly forward. Hinge at hips, bend knees, keep chest upright, shoulders back. Grip the load firmly, close to the body. Brace your core as if preparing for a light punch.
4 Execute Controlled Lift — Lift using leg muscles, not the lower back. Keep the load close to your navel. Breathe out as you lift. Avoid any twisting of the torso; pivot with your feet. Set the load down in reverse order — squat, place, release.
5 Post‑Lift Debrief & Evaluation — Operator and supervisor review the lift using the SafeLift checklist (SF‑102). Score posture, execution, and load handling. A passing score is ≥80%. Record the result in SafeDesk and update the operator’s certification badge.
