Purpose

To ensure all electrical panel arc flash labels are present, legible, and accurate. This procedure provides the incident energy, arc flash boundary, and required PPE data essential for protecting qualified workers performing energized work. Regular verification maintains compliance with CSA Z462 and reduces the risk of arc flash injuries.

Scope

This procedure applies to all 120V–600V electrical panels within the facility, including main distribution panels, motor control centers (MCCs), switchboards, panelboards, and subpanels. It does not cover high‑voltage systems (above 600V), utility‑owned equipment, or DC systems unless specifically included in a site‑specific study. All verifications must be performed by a qualified electrical worker (per CSA Z462).

Safety Precautions

  • ARCEven during inspection, wear arc‑rated clothing/PPE as required by the existing label or the study’s incident energy for that panel. No exposed skin above the neck, no unrated synthetics.
  • QUALOnly qualified electrical workers (as defined by CSA Z462) may open panel covers or handle live parts. Unqualified assistants must remain outside the arc‑flash boundary.
  • TOOLUse only insulated hand tools rated for the system voltage when making contact with any energized components. Non‑contact voltage testers must be verified on a known source before and after use.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Obtain the arc flash study report. Retrieve the current arc flash study from the engineering department or approved software. Verify the study revision date and that the panel is included. Note any previous discrepancies.
2 Locate and inspect the existing label. Identify the arc flash label on the panel door or adjacent surface. Verify it is permanently attached, not peeling, and fully legible. Clean any grime with a dry rag. If missing, proceed directly to step 4.
3 Cross‑reference label data with the study. Compare incident energy (cal/cm²), arc flash boundary (mm/ft), nominal voltage, and PPE category against the study’s values for the same panel. Any deviation ±10% must be flagged. Take a photo of the existing label.
4 Validate label legibility and durability. Inspect for fading, chemical damage, or mechanical wear. Labels must be printed on UV‑resistant, adhesive‑backed material rated for the environment. Replace any label where text cannot be read at 1 m distance or that has visible damage.
5 Update or replace the label. Using the approved software and thermal printer, generate a new label per the study data. Apply the label within 2 inches of the original location (or centred on the panel door). Use self‑laminating labels for high‑touch or outdoor panels. Ensure no existing warning information is removed without replacement.
6 Document and close out. Complete the verification log (paper or digital) with panel ID, date, inspector name, label condition (pass/fail), and any replacement actions. Upload photos to the compliance database. If discrepancies remain (e.g., study data not matching panel), escalate to the responsible engineer and issue a corrective action order.
