Purpose

Eliminate the risk of fire, explosion, and asphyxiation caused by undetected propane leaks at the tank-to-regulator connection point. This procedure establishes the minimum standard for leak testing prior to every tank change or daily connection.

Scope

Applies to all propane-powered industrial lift trucks (Class 4 and 5) operating within the facility. This SOP covers pre-shift leak inspection of the tank connection, post-fill coupling verification, and the mandatory response protocol upon leak detection.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOPark forklift on level surface, engage parking brake, turn off engine, and remove key. Close the propane service valve hand-tight (clockwise) before proceeding with the test.
  • PPEWear CSA-approved safety glasses with side shields. A Class B fire extinguisher (dry chemical) must be located within 15 ft of the testing area.
  • VENTPerform all leak tests outdoors or in a well-ventilated area specifically rated for flammable gas storage and handling. Never test indoors near ignition sources.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre-Test Isolation. Ensure the forklift is parked on a level surface, engine OFF, parking brake ENGAGED, and key REMOVED. Close the propane tank service valve fully (clockwise).
2 Connection Inspection. Visually inspect the O-ring or gasket on the tank coupling for cuts, cracks, or deformation. Inspect the threads on the service valve and the mating nut for galling, wear, or damage. Replace defective components before proceeding.
3 Solution Application. Charge the squeeze bottle with approved leak detection solution. Liberally apply the solution to the service valve outlet, the coupling nut threads, the O-ring interface, and the vent valve (if present).
4 Pressurize and Observe. Slowly open the service valve (counter-clockwise) ¼ to ½ turn. Observe the applied solution for a minimum of 10 seconds. A growing bubble or steady stream of bubbles indicates a definitive leak path.
5 Leak Response Protocol. If bubbles form, IMMEDIATELY close the service valve (clockwise). Tag the tank as "DEFECTIVE — LEAK DETECTED." Do not operate the forklift. Remove the tank from service and notify the supervisor. Do not attempt to tighten fittings while the system is pressurized.
6 Pass/Fail Documentation. If no bubbles are observed, close the service valve fully. Wipe down the tested area with a clean cloth. Record the inspection result on the daily pre-shift checklist or SafeDesk digital log. The tank is cleared for connection to the forklift regulator hose.
