Pushing Pulling Force Measurement for Carts
This procedure documents how to measure the static and dynamic push/pull forces required to move industrial carts. Results are compared against ergonomic thresholds (WorkSafeBC & CSA Z432) to prevent over‑exertion injuries and guide engineering controls.
To establish a repeatable, accurate method for measuring the force required to push and pull industrial carts under representative load conditions. The data collected supports ergonomic risk assessments, informs load reduction decisions, and verifies compliance with regulatory force limits (e.g., WorkSafeBC maximum initial force of 225 N, sustained 100 N).
This SOP applies to two‑wheeled and four‑wheeled industrial carts, platform trucks, and hand‑operated mobile equipment used in warehousing, manufacturing, and distribution facilities. It covers both static (breakaway) and dynamic (rolling) force measurements on dry, level concrete or asphalt surfaces. Carts with powered assistance, fully automated guided vehicles, or off‑road casters are excluded.
- Do not exceed the cart’s rated capacity. Verify the total loaded weight with a calibrated floor scale before measuring.
- Wear close‑fitting gloves to prevent hand fatigue. Ensure the force gauge handle is dry and debris‑free.
- Maintain a neutral spine. Do not jerk or yank the gauge — apply force smoothly to avoid muscle strain or inaccurate readings.
- Clear the test path of personnel, tripping hazards, and obstructions. Mark a 5 m straight‑line corridor with tape.
- Digital force gauge (push‑pull type, minimum 500 N capacity, ±1 N accuracy) with peak‑hold function
- Industrial cart with representative load (actual operating weight verified by floor scale)
- Measuring tape (at least 5 m) for path length and handle height verification
- Marking tape or chalk to define a 5 m straight test corridor
- Calibrated floor scale or platform scale (accuracy ±1 kg)
- Camera or clipboard with data collection sheet (include fields: date, operator, cart ID, load weight, push/pull static, push/pull dynamic)
