Purpose

To verify that every smoke and carbon monoxide detector installed in the facility is operational, within its calibration / expiration window, and capable of alerting personnel to a fire or hazardous gas condition. Regular testing reduces the risk of injury, property damage, and regulatory fines, and ensures compliance with the Canada Labour Code Part II and provincial fire codes (e.g., WorkSafeBC OHS Regulations).

Scope

This SOP applies to all fixed smoke (ionization, photoelectric, and multi‑sensor) and carbon monoxide detectors in industrial warehouses, manufacturing plants, machine shops, and storage facilities under the jurisdiction of Ryxen or its clients. Excluded: residential dwelling units (e.g., employee break rooms) are tested under a separate residential program. This procedure covers quarterly functional tests and annual sensitivity verification (using calibrated aerosol/gas).

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the fire alarm control panel before testing to prevent unwanted alarms triggering emergency response. Notify the facility control room and security team of scheduled testing.
  • COUse only certified CO test gas (50 ppm) from a calibrated cylinder. Never use vehicle exhaust or combustion by‑products — they contain other toxic gases and exceed safe exposure limits.
  • ELEVWhen using a ladder to reach ceiling-mounted detectors, ensure it is on stable ground, within its rated capacity, and that a second technician acts as a spotter. Use a personal fall arrest system if working above 10 ft (3 m).
  • PPEWear safety glasses, work gloves, and slip‑resistant footwear. If working near live electrical circuits, use insulated tools and maintain distance from exposed conductors.

  • Carbon monoxide test gas (50 ppm CO in air, certified cylinder with regulator)
  • Type 1A multi‑function ladder (300 lb capacity) — or scissors lift for high bay areas

  • Lockout/tagout kit (lock, hasp, tag)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/tagout the fire alarm control panel or place it in test mode. Notify facility control room and security. Ensure no other personnel are working on a live alarm loop.
2 Visually inspect each detector: check for cracks, corrosion, loose wiring, obstructed vents, and that the indicator LED is visible. Clean vents with compressed air if needed.
3 Using the smoke detector test aerosol, hold the can 6 inches (150 mm) from the detector’s sensor vents. Spray a 1-2 second burst. Verify activation (solid red LED, audible alarm) within 20 seconds. If no alarm, clean the detector chamber and retest; if still failing, tag for replacement.
4 Apply CO test gas at 50 ppm directly to the detector’s inlet port for 5-10 seconds. The detector must alarm within 2 minutes. Use only certified calibration gas — never vehicle exhaust.
5 Verify that the fire alarm panel or building management system shows the correct alarm/fault indication for the tested detector. Reset the detector and panel after each test.
6 Record test date, detector location, outcome (pass/fail), technician name, and any corrective actions in the inspection logbook or SafeDesk app. Replace any failed detectors immediately. Schedule next test per regulatory interval (typically monthly for industrial facilities).
