This procedure defines the mandatory daily pre-use inspection and operational verification for operators of articulating and telescopic truck mounted boom cranes. Following this checklist reduces the risk of mechanical failure, crane tip-over, and personnel injury.

Purpose

To establish a standardized daily operator safety checklist for truck mounted boom cranes that ensures all critical structural, hydraulic, and safety components are inspected and verified functional before the crane is placed into service. This procedure aims to prevent accidents caused by overlooked mechanical defects, fluid leaks, or improper setup.

Scope

This SOP applies to all operators of truck mounted boom cranes (articulating or telescopic) with a rated capacity of 20 tons or less, operating on construction sites, industrial yards, or any worksite under the jurisdiction of Canadian provincial health and safety regulations. It covers the daily pre-start inspection, outrigger deployment, functional test, and verification of safety devices. Annual load testing, major repairs, and recertification are outside the scope of this document.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOPerform lockout/tagout on the crane engine and hydraulic system before any repair or maintenance tasks. Daily inspection does not require LOTO unless a defect is found and must be corrected.
  • PPEOperator must wear CSA-approved hard hat, hi-vis vest, steel-toed boots, and cut-resistant gloves. Safety glasses required while inspecting hydraulic lines or working near pressurized fluid.
  • STABNever operate the crane without outriggers fully deployed and pads on stable ground. Use steel cribbing or load-spreading pads on soft surfaces. Check for underground utilities before deploying outriggers.
  • LOADNever exceed the crane's rated capacity as shown on the load chart. Account for all rigging, hook, and block weight. The load chart must be current and visible from the operator's station.
  • E-STOPVerify the emergency stop function interrupts all crane motions immediately. If the e-stop fails, remove the crane from service and tag it out until repaired.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Park and secure the truck – Position the crane truck on level, compacted ground. Engage the parking brake, chock the wheels, and turn on the hazard lights. Start the engine and engage the PTO at low idle. Confirm that the crane is still in its travel-stowed position.
2 Perform a visual structural inspection – Walk around the crane and inspect: boom section welds, pivot pins, turntable bolts, hydraulic cylinder rods, and the carrier chassis. Look for cracks, deformation, corrosion, or missing fasteners. Use a flashlight to examine hidden areas. Note any damage on the checklist.
3 Check fluid levels and leaks – With the engine off, check hydraulic fluid level (sight glass or dipstick), engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid. Inspect around all hoses, fittings, and cylinder seals for evidence of leaks. Top off fluids as needed. Record any leaks found for repair.
4 Deploy and verify outriggers – Activate the outrigger controls and extend each beam fully. Place pads or cribbing under each foot, ensuring solid contact with the ground. After all outriggers are set, rock the truck body by hand or by gently cycling the suspension to confirm stability. Re-check the outrigger locking pins.
5 Function test all crane movements – From the operator's station, slowly cycle each function: boom extend/retract (all sections), boom up/down, rotation (left and right), and winch up/down. Listen for abnormal noise, hesitation, or drift. Operate the auxiliary functions if equipped. Test both the main control and the remote control pendant. Note any anomalies.
6 Verify safety devices and load chart – Press the emergency stop button; all crane motion must stop immediately. Reset the e-stop and confirm the load holding valves keep the boom in position. Check that the rated capacity limiter (RCI/LMI) powers on and displays a valid zero-load reading. Locate the load chart — it must be affixed to the machine, legible, and match the current configuration. Sign and date the checklist.
