Purpose

To establish a standardized, safe procedure for replacing the air compressor governor and the air dryer desiccant cartridge on rotary screw or reciprocating compressor packages. Proper replacement restores load/unload pressure setpoints, prevents continuous blowdown, and ensures the compressed air system delivers air with a dewpoint suitable for downstream equipment. This SOP reduces unscheduled downtime and extends the life of downstream filters and tools.

Scope

This SOP applies to all industrial stationary air compressors equipped with a pilot-operated or solenoid-driven governor (load/unload control) and a regenerative desiccant dryer with replaceable cartridges. It covers the replacement of the governor assembly (including O-rings and gaskets) and the desiccant cartridge. It does not cover full dryer teardown, dryer purge valve replacement, or compressor end removal. Personnel performing this task must have completed compressed air system LOTO and mechanical maintenance training.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOAlways perform lockout/tagout per facility procedure: isolate electrical power, close isolation valves, bleed all compressed air to atmosphere, and verify zero energy before beginning any work.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, and steel-toed boots. Desiccant dust is a respiratory irritant — use a N95 mask when handling spent cartridges.
  • HOTAllow compressor and dryer surfaces to cool for at least 15 minutes after shutdown — surface temperatures can exceed 80 °C.
  • PRESNever remove a desiccant fill cap while the dryer is pressurized. Purge residual pressure in dryer sump using manual drain valve.
  • SOLVOnly use isopropyl alcohol or approved solvent for cleaning. Keep rags away from hot surfaces.

  • PTFE thread sealant tape (for any NPT fittings)
  • Isopropyl alcohol wipes (70% or higher)
  • Lint-free cloths
  • Silicone grease (for O‑ring lubrication, if recommended)
  • Adjustable wrench set (1/2″ – 1-1/2″)
  • Socket set (3/8″ drive, metric & SAE)
  • Torque wrench (0–100 ft·lb)
  • Hex key set (1.5–10 mm)
  • Desiccant cartridge wrench (if OEM‑supplied)
  • Digital multimeter (for solenoid coil test)
  • Lockout/tagout kit (padlock, tag, lockout hasp)
  • Waste disposal container for spent desiccant

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout (LOTO). Shut down the air compressor at the main disconnect. Attach a personal padlock and tag. Close inlet and outlet isolation valves on the compressor package and the dryer. Manually open all drain valves (compressor wet tank, dryer sump, filter legs). Wait until all pressure gauges read zero. Verify zero energy by briefly pressing a blowdown button or cracking a fitting (with PPE).
2 Isolate Dryer and Remove Desiccant Access Cover. If the dryer has a separate electrical heater, disconnect and lock the heater power. Remove the desiccant fill port cover or top flange bolts (typically 8–12 bolts, 13 mm or 1/2″). Lift the cover carefully – it may be heavy. Place it on a clean surface. Inspect the gasket – replace if cracked.
3 Remove Old Desiccant Cartridge. Use a desiccant cartridge wrench or a strap wrench to rotate the cartridge counter‑clockwise. If stuck, tap the wrench handle lightly with a rubber mallet. Lift the cartridge out. Pour any loose desiccant beads into a sealed container. Dispose per local hazardous waste rules (silica gel or molecular sieve – check SDS).
4 Clean Dryer Housing. Wipe the inside of the dryer vessel thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol wipes. Remove all fines, oil residue, and corrosion dust. Use a lint‑free cloth to dry. Inspect the O‑ring groove on the cartridge flange – it must be clean and free of nicks.
5 Install New Desiccant Cartridge. Lightly lubricate the cartridge O‑ring with a thin film of silicone grease (if recommended by manufacturer). Thread the cartridge into the vessel hand‑tight. Then use the cartridge wrench to tighten an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn – do not exceed the torque marking on the cartridge. Reinstall the access cover with a new gasket if needed. Tighten flange bolts in a criss‑cross pattern to the torque spec in the dryer manual.
6 Replace Air Compressor Governor. Locate the governor mounted on the compressor end‑cover or on a separate bracket near the oil separator. Disconnect the pilot air lines – mark or photograph each line to ensure correct reconnection. Remove the mounting bolts (typically 4–6 hex cap screws). Pull the governor straight off its mounting face. Clean the face with a lint‑free cloth. Install the new governor using new O‑rings or gasket provided. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s specification (usually 15–25 ft·lb). Reconnect the pilot lines. Verify the solenoid connector is clean and fully seated.
7 Governor Solenoid Check. With a digital multimeter set to resistance (Ω), measure across the solenoid coil terminals. A healthy coil typically reads 10–50 Ω (check OEM spec). If open or shorted, replace the solenoid. Also check that the plunger moves freely when 24 VDC is applied (if test bench available).
8 Reassemble Dryer and Restore Service. Replace any access covers or guards. Open the inlet and outlet valves on the dryer. Remove LOTO from the compressor. Restore power. Start the compressor and allow it to build pressure. Observe the governor: it should unload (stop compressing) when the target pressure is reached and reload when pressure drops. Check for air leaks at governor pilot connections and dryer flange. Listen for the dryer purge cycle – it should click and hiss every 60–90 seconds.
9 Final Verification. Monitor the system for 10 minutes after startup. Log the pressure cut‑out and cut‑in values. Check that the dewpoint indicator (if installed) returns to normal range. Record the part numbers of the replaced governor and desiccant cartridge, the date, and the technician’s name in the CMMS or maintenance log.
