To define the mandatory procedure for collecting, containing, and disposing of oily condensate drained from air compressor wet/dry receivers, intercoolers, aftercoolers, and downstream filtration equipment. The primary objective is to ensure full compliance with local and federal environmental regulations regarding oil-contaminated water, prevent soil and groundwater contamination, avoid costly municipal sewer violation fines, and centralize waste stream accountability via the ServiceGrid CMMS.
This procedure applies to all stationary and portable compressed air systems operating within the facility that produce condensate containing visible or measurable hydrocarbon contamination (>15 ppm typically). It covers both automatic electronic drain traps and manual drain valves. This procedure specifically applies to condensate management and does not supersede bulk oil change or compressor lubricant handling procedures. All shifts and maintenance personnel must adhere to this SOP.
- Lockout/Tagout: Isolate and lock out the compressor at the upstream disconnect switch before accessing pressurized sections of the drain system. Do not rely solely on automatic drain controls being in "Off" mode. Verify zero energy.
- Personal Protective Equipment: Wear splash-resistant safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1+), chemical-resistant nitrile gloves (9 mil minimum), and steel-toed boots. Keep a fully stocked spill kit within arm's reach.
- Hot Surfaces: Intercoolers, aftercoolers, and discharge piping can exceed 80°C. Allow components to cool to below 40°C or verify surface temperature with an IR thermometer before performing any manual valve work.
- Environmental Compliance: Oily condensate is a regulated waste. It is strictly illegal to discharge directly to storm drains, sanitary sewers (without an approved Oil/Water Separator), or onto the ground. Verify local municipal discharge limits before commencing work.
- Oil/Water Separator (OWS) system approved for lubricant type (e.g., coalescing media, gravity separator) OR dedicated HDPE collection caddy (20L minimum).
- Splash-proof funnel (nylon or HDPE, grounded if explosive atmosphere risk exists).
- Universal spill kit: overpack sorbent pads, oil-only socks, disposal bags, PPE.
- Nitrile gloves (chemical resistant, 9 mil+) and ANSI Z87.1+ safety glasses.
- Disposable wipers/rags and a small parts tray for valve disassembly if needed.
- pH test strips or turbidity tube (if required by municipal discharge permit).
- ServiceGrid CMMS mobile device or kiosk station for digital logging & asset tagging.
- Hand pump (pneumatic or rotary) for transferring collected condensate to bulk waste tank.
- Hazardous waste manifest or ServiceGrid digital waste disposal log form.
