Compressor Oil Analysis Sampling Procedure

This procedure defines the standardized method for extracting, handling, and submitting compressor lubricant samples for spectrometric and physical property analysis. Proper sampling prevents contamination artifacts and ensures accurate wear debris trending in accordance with ISO 4406 cleanliness standards.

Purpose

The primary objective of this SOP is to ensure the reliability of compressor lubricant analysis by eliminating sample contamination, establishing a consistent baseline for wear debris trending, and detecting abnormal wear patterns—such as babbitt bearing failure or gear scuffing—before secondary damage occurs. Data derived from this procedure directly supports condition-based oil change intervals and extends equipment service life.

Scope

This procedure applies to all fixed and portable rotary screw compressors (Aerzen, Atlas Copco, Sullair) and centrifugal compressors (Elliott, Siemens) utilizing mineral or synthetic polyolester (POE) lubricants within the facility's reliability maintenance program. It is mandatory for all quarterly and annual PM intervals. This procedure does not cover refrigerant or reciprocating compressor oil analysis.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout compressor driver (motor/engine) at the upstream disconnect switch. Verify zero energy state before opening any pressurized oil ports.
  • PPEWear chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile), safety glasses, and oil-resistant footwear. Hot oil can cause severe burns; allow the system to cool to < 60°C before sampling.
  • PRVDepressurize the oil reservoir to 0 psig using the manual vent valve. Never attempt to loosen a sample port fitting while the system is under pressure.
Required Tools & Materials
  • 250 mL HDPE sample bottles, pre-cleaned by the analytical lab
  • Nitrile chemical-resistant gloves (minimum 9 mil thickness)
  • Lint-free wipes (Kimtech Science or equivalent polyester blend)
  • 1/4" NPT x 1/2" tube sampling adapter with ball valve
  • Permanent marker, chain-of-custody form (per ASTM D7416), and tamper-evident bag
  • Cooler with ice packs (maintain 2°C to 8°C for transport)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 System Preparation — Run the compressor under normal load for a minimum of 1 hour to reach stable operating temperature and fully suspend wear contaminants in the oil. Record the operating hours, discharge pressure, and temperature on the sample chain-of-custody form.
2 Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) — Perform 24-hour LOTO on the compressor drive. Isolate the entire oil system by closing the isolation valves. Depressurize the reservoir to 0 psig through the vent port. Attach a "Do Not Operate" tag.
3 Port Cleaning & Purge — Remove the protective cap from the designated sample port. Wipe the port boss and valve stem with a lint-free wipe. Attach the 1/4" NPT sampling adapter. Open the valve and purge 100–200 mL of oil into a waste container to flush out standing fluid and debris from the dead-leg.
4 Sample Extraction — Position the clean 250 mL HDPE bottle directly under the adapter stream. Open the valve and fill the bottle to 80% capacity (approximately 200 mL). Avoid entraining air bubbles. Immediately close the valve and seal the bottle tightly with the cap.
5 Labeling & Preservation — Using a permanent marker, label the bottle with the compressor asset ID, sample date, operating hours, and technician initials. Place the bottle in a leak-proof plastic bag, then immediately transfer it to a cooler with ice packs (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze.
6 Documentation & Chain of Custody — Fully complete the ASTM D7416 chain-of-custody form. Note any visual anomalies such as cloudiness, dark coloration, or a metallic sheen. Submit the sample to the analytical lab within 48 hours of extraction to ensure data integrity.
7 Post-Sample Restoration — Close and hand-tighten the sample port cap. Remove LOTO tags, restore isolation valves to their normal operating positions, perform a pre-start safety check, and return the compressor to service. Verify zero leaks at the sample port before leaving the area.
