Beam Saw Main Blade Parallelism To Fence Check
Verifies that the main saw blade travel remains parallel to the rip fence within 0.005″ (0.13 mm) over full fence stroke. Prevents binding, kickback, and dimensional defects in panel cutting operations.
To ensure the main saw blade path is parallel to the rip fence within the manufacturer’s tolerance (typically ≤ 0.005″ / 0.13 mm). Parallel misalignment causes blade binding, excessive heat, poor cut quality (especially with scoring blades), and increases the risk of workpiece kickback. This check is part of the daily or weekly PM schedule for beam saws in high‑volume panel processing.
Applies to all CNC beam saws with a main blade and a movable rip fence (manual or servo‑driven). Includes single‑blade and dual‑blade (scoring) configurations. This procedure does not cover blade runout, arbor bearing condition, or fence squareness to the table—those are separate PM tasks.
- Perform Lockout/Tagout on the main electrical disconnect and pneumatic supply (if present). Verify zero energy state before beginning. Do not rely on the saw’s power‑off switch alone.
- Wear ANSI Z87.1 rated safety glasses, hearing protection, and cut‑resistant gloves. Tungsten carbide teeth are extremely sharp; handle blade with care.
- The blade guard must be removed only after LOTO. Reinstall and secure before re‑energizing the saw. Do not operate the saw with the guard removed.
- Dial indicator with magnetic base (0.001″ / 0.01 mm resolution)
- Feeler gauge set (0.0015″ – 0.010″)
- Hex key set (metric & imperial) – typically 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm
- Combination square (12″ or 24″)
- Torque wrench (Nm or ft‑lb as specified by saw manufacturer)
- Clean lint‑free cloth
- Approved PM log sheet (paper or digital via ServiceGrid)
Isolate and lock out the main electrical disconnect. Tag the machine. For pneumatic‑assisted saws, depressurize and lock the air supply. Remove the blade guard assembly using the correct hex key. Store guard and fasteners in a clean location.
Raise the main blade to its maximum height (or to the position normally used for the thickest material). Wipe any sawdust from the table. Mount the magnetic base dial indicator on the table surface, positioned so the plunger contacts the leading face of a carbide tooth near the front arc of the blade.
Slowly rotate the blade by hand (use a block of wood to avoid touching the teeth) until the indicator plunger rests on the same tooth face. Set the dial to zero. Slide the rip fence fully forward to the indicator location, ensuring the fence face is parallel to the blade travel. Record reading.
Without moving the dial indicator, slide the fence to the rearmost travel limit. Keep the plunger on the same tooth. Read the dial indicator. The difference between the front and rear readings must be ≤ 0.005″ (0.13 mm). If within spec, skip to Step 6.
If deviation exceeds tolerance, loosen the fence guide‑rail bracket bolts (typically 2–4 per side) using the appropriate hex key. Use the set screws on the brackets to pivot the fence until the indicator reads zero at both ends. Tighten bracket bolts to manufacturer torque spec. Re‑check parallelism; repeat adjustment if necessary.
Zero the indicator again and perform one more full front‑to‑rear sweep. Confirm ≤ 0.005″ deviation. Remove the dial indicator. Clean the table. Reinstall the blade guard and tighten fasteners to spec. Remove LOTO and re‑energize. Record readings and any adjustments in the PM log (paper or digital).
