Purpose

To verify that the beam saw rip fence scale is indicating true distance from the blade. Accurate scale readings ensure panel cuts are within tolerance, reducing waste, rework, and safety risks. This preventive task also identifies worn or loose components before they degrade cutting quality.

Scope

This procedure applies to all fixed-beam panel saws and sliding-beam saws equipped with an adjustable rip fence scale. It covers both inch and metric scales and is intended for use by qualified maintenance technicians or experienced machine operators. The verification frequency is every 90 days or after any impact event to the fence assembly.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the machine and verify zero energy state before any cleaning, inspection, or adjustment work begins.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, and closed-toe steel-toe boots. Use hearing protection if the facility requires it.
  • BIOBe aware of sharp edges on the saw blade and fence assembly. Handle cleaning solvents in a well-ventilated area.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Calibration gauge: certified tape measure (±0.5 mm accuracy) or laser distance meter (res. 0.1 mm)
  • Feeler gauge set (0.1–1.0 mm) or precision shim stock
  • Adjustment wrench (size per beam saw manufacturer — typically 8–10 mm hex or socket)
  • Clean lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol (70%+) or recommended solvent
  • Calibration log sheet or CMMS device (paper or tablet)
  • Lockout/tagout kit and standard PPE

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Perform lockout/tagout on the beam saw. Disconnect electrical power, lock the main disconnect, and tag with your name and date. Verify zero energy state by attempting to start the saw. Wear required PPE throughout.
2 Clean the rip fence track, scale surface, and fence locking mechanism using a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol. Remove all sawdust, pitch, and debris. Ensure the scale markings are visible and unobstructed.
3 Inspect the fence carriage, locking handle, and guide rails for wear, play, or damage. Confirm the fence moves smoothly across the full travel without binding. Report any abnormalities before proceeding.
4 Set the fence to the first test position: 100 mm (or 4 in.) on the scale. Lock the fence securely. Measure the actual distance from the fence face to the nearest blade tooth using the calibration gauge. Record the reading in the log.
5 Repeat the measurement at three additional positions: 300 mm, 600 mm, and 1200 mm (or at approximately 25 %, 50 %, and 75 % of full stroke). For each position, lock the fence, measure, and log both scale indication and actual reading.
6 Compare each actual measurement to the scale indication. If any deviation exceeds ±0.5 mm, proceed to adjustment: loosen the scale retaining screws (typically two hex screws), shift the scale to align with the measured value, then retighten. Use a feeler gauge to verify zero offset after adjustment.
7 After adjustment, re-verify all test positions. Record final measurements, the date, technician name, and any comments in the calibration log or CMMS. Remove LOTO, restore power, and perform a test cut on a scrap panel to confirm accuracy. File the log according to your maintenance management system.
