Cardboard Baler Tying & Ejection
This standard operating procedure governs the complete tying and ejection cycle for vertical downstroke and horizontal closed-door cardboard balers. It defines the sequence from full-chamber verification through wire tensioning, gate release, bale ejection, and data logging — ensuring consistent bale quality, preventing mechanical jams, and maintaining safe operator clearances throughout every cycle.
Standardize the tying and ejection cycle of cardboard balers to produce consistently dense, securely wired bales while eliminating pinch-point injuries, wire breakage hazards, and ejection jams. This SOP ensures every operator follows the same sequence of compression verification, wire tensioning, gate clearance, and post-cycle inspection — reducing mechanical downtime and maintaining compliance with CSA Z432-18 safeguarding standards.
This procedure applies to all fixed-chamber vertical downstroke balers (single-door and dual-door configurations) and horizontal closed-door balers used in facility waste management and recycling operations. It covers the entire post-fill cycle: compression safety check, manual and automatic wire tying, ejection gate protocol, bale discharge, and cycle documentation. It does not cover baler maintenance, hydraulic system repair, or wire-tying head calibration — those are addressed in separate PM schedules.
- Lockout/tagout the baler at the main disconnect before any chamber entry, jam clearing, or wire head maintenance. Verify zero-energy state with a qualified technician using a lockout padlock and tag per CSA Z460-20.
- Wear cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A5+, Kevlar-lined), safety glasses with side shields (ANSI Z87.1), steel-toed boots (ASTM F2413), and hearing protection (NRR 25+ dB earmuffs or earplugs) throughout the entire tying and ejection cycle.
- Keep all body parts, tools, and loose clothing clear of the ram path, ejection gate hinge points, and wire tie-off slots during active cycling. Maintain minimum 6 ft clearance from the gate swing arc during ejection.
- Inspect all hydraulic hoses, fittings, and cylinder seals for weeping, cracking, or degradation before each shift. Never exceed 2,500 psi system pressure. Immediately report any visible hydraulic leaks to maintenance.
- Use only manufacturer-specified baling wire gauge (10-gauge galvanized) and length (72 in per tie). Wire failure under tension can cause catastrophic whiplash — stand clear of the tie-off zone during tensioning and do not reuse wire fragments.
- Baling wire — 10-gauge galvanized, 72 in length per tie (qty 4 per bale for standard 30×48×48 in bale)
- Wire twister tool — pneumatic or manual, rated for 10-gauge wire, with integral tension gauge
- Cut-resistant gloves — ANSI A5 level, Kevlar-lined, gauntlet style
- Safety glasses — ANSI Z87.1 rated, anti-fog coated
- Steel-toed boots — ASTM F2413 rated, oil-resistant sole
- Hearing protection — NRR 25+ dB, earmuff or earplug style
- Torque wrench — 0–200 ft·lb range, calibrated within past 12 months
- Certified bale scale — floor scale, 0–2,000 lb capacity, ±1 lb accuracy
- Bale identification tags — water-resistant, with wire-tie attachment hole
- Hydraulic fluid — ISO VG 46 (Mobil DTE 25 or equivalent per baler manufacturer)
- Grease gun — lever-action, with NLGI #2 lithium complex grease
