CNC Router C-Axis Rotary Backlash Check
Systematic procedure for measuring, evaluating, and adjusting rotary backlash on the C-axis of a CNC router. Ensures positioning accuracy for multi-axis machining operations.
The C-axis (rotary) backlash check quantifies the mechanical play between the drive train and the rotary table. Excessive backlash causes positional errors, taper issues, and reduced surface finish in 4‑axis machining. This procedure standardizes measurement and adjustment to maintain machine accuracy within manufacturer tolerances (typically <0.003 in at 4‑inch radius).
This SOP applies to all CNC routers equipped with a rotary C‑axis (continuous or indexing) driven by a servo motor with a gearbox or direct-drive coupling. It covers: pre‑inspection, indicator setup, backlash measurement in both directions, comparison to specification, and mechanical adjustment (if applicable). Does not cover electronic compensation via CNC parameters.
- Lockout/Tagout the main machine disconnect. Verify zero energy with a rated voltmeter before any physical contact with moving parts.
- Wear safety glasses and impact-resistant gloves during tool setup and adjustment. Keep loose clothing and jewelry away from rotating components.
- Never place hands or tools inside the C-axis rotation zone while the machine is powered. Use a stick or remote jog pendant for indicator positioning.
- Dial indicator (0.0001 in or 0.001 mm resolution) with magnetic base
- Precision ground reference pin or flat plate for indicator contact
- 10 mm combination wrench and 5 mm T-handle hex key
- Feeler gauge set (0.002–0.020 in)
- Torque wrench (range 0–100 in·lb or 0–12 N·m)

- Clean rag and degreaser for contact surfaces
