Purpose

The purpose of this accelerated UV test is to simulate long-term outdoor exposure conditions in a controlled laboratory environment to assess the durability of PVC edgeband materials. Colour fastness, gloss retention, and physical integrity are measured to ensure the product meets customer specifications and warranty requirements. Results enable proactive material selection and formulation adjustments before production runs.

Scope

This SOP applies to all incoming PVC edgeband rolls (coloured, textured, or solid) from approved suppliers that are intended for interior or exterior-use cabinetry. It covers sample preparation, xenon-arc exposure parameters, interim inspection intervals, final evaluation criteria, and documentation requirements. Excluded are edgeband materials with metallic finishes or those specifically certified for UV resistance by the manufacturer.

Safety Precautions
  • UVNever look directly into the xenon-arc lamp while the chamber is operating. Use external viewing ports with UV-protective shielding.
  • BURNAllow the specimen chamber and lamp housing to cool for at least 15 minutes after cycle completion before opening. Surface temperatures may exceed 80 °C.
  • PPEWear nitrile gloves when handling specimens to avoid contamination. Safety glasses rated for UV protection must be worn during chamber operation.

  • ISO blue wool references (grades 3, 4, 5)
  • Digital caliper (resolution 0.01 mm)
  • Deionized water supply for humidity circuit
  • Lab notebook and pre-printed data sheets (Appendix A)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare test specimens: Cut PVC edgeband samples to 250 mm × 100 mm. Label each specimen with a permanent marker (ID, supplier, batch). Measure initial colour (L*a*b*) and gloss (60°) on three points per specimen. Record as baseline in the data sheet.
2 Calibrate the xenon-arc weatherometer: set irradiance to 0.55 W/m² at 340 nm, black panel temperature to 63 ± 3 °C, chamber air temperature to 38 ± 2 °C, and relative humidity to 50 ± 5 %. Run a 30-minute warm‑up cycle with dummy samples before loading test specimens.
3 Mount specimens on sample holders in the weatherometer, ensuring no overlap and uniform exposure. Include a set of ISO blue wool references (grades 3, 4, 5) mounted adjacent to the test specimens. Close the chamber door and verify all interlocks.
4 Set the cycle program: continuous light (no dark cycle) for the first 12 hours, then a repeating block of 102 minutes light followed by 18 minutes light + deionized water spray. Total exposure time: 48 hours. Start the test and note the start time in the log.
5 Interim inspections: At 12 h, 24 h, 36 h, and 48 h, pause the cycle (if required) and visually inspect specimens through the viewing port. Remove one set of blue wool references at each interval. Assess fading against the grey scale (ISO 105-A02) and record any visible changes (cracking, chalking, yellowing).
6 After 48 hours, end the test. Open the chamber only after a 15‑minute cool-down. Remove all specimens and blue wool references. Allow specimens to condition in a controlled environment (23 ± 2 °C, 50 ± 5 % RH) for 24 hours before final measurements.
7 Record final colour values (ΔE*ab) using the spectrophotometer, measure gloss retention (ΔGloss 60°), and visually inspect for surface defects. Acceptance criteria: ΔE*ab ≤ 3.0, gloss retention ≥ 80 % of initial, no visible cracking or chalking. Document all results in the data sheet and flag non‑conforming batches for supplier review.
